Bhilai Steel Plant Launches Industrial Orientation Programme for Vocational Trainees, Focus on Safety and Skill Development

Posted On: 13 APR 2026 6:24PM by PIB Raipur

Reinforcing its role as a key driver of industrial excellence and professional capacity-building, the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has launched an Industrial Orientation Training Programme for Vocational Trainees at its Human Resource–Learning and Development (HR–L&D) Centre.

The initiative is aimed at equipping young trainees with industry-ready competencies and bridging the gap between classroom learning and shop-floor practices. Designed as a structured and immersive orientation module, the programme provides comprehensive exposure to the safety ecosystem and operational framework of an integrated steel plant.

As part of the training, participants are sensitised to critical safety domains, including gas safety protocols, electrical safety measures and rail movement precautions. Special emphasis is laid on the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), promoting a ‘zero-harm’ work culture. The programme also features expert-led sessions that offer trainees a holistic understanding of the plant’s complex and large-scale industrial operations.

Highlighting its strong industry–academia engagement, during the financial year 2025–26, the Human Resource–Learning and Development Department of Bhilai Steel Plant collaborated with 187 reputed technical institutions across the country. These include premier institutes such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) and Rungta College of Engineering, among others.

The scale and effectiveness of the plant’s training initiatives are reflected in its outreach achievements. In the previous financial year, more than 1,412 trainees were successfully upskilled, gaining practical exposure to real-world industrial operations. Building on this momentum, the plant has set a target to train an even larger number of candidates during the financial year 2026–27.
