In a significant measure to stabilize the regional energy market, Shri A S Sahney, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), today (10.04.2026) in Chennai announced the increase of the commercial LPG quota for Tamil Nadu to 70% of original levels, effective immediately. Following a detailed review of the state's fuel status, the Chairman assured the public that the supply of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel remains "absolutely comfortable," with refining capacities operating at near-full levels.

Shri A S Sahney emphasized that domestic LPG remains the top priority, with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) currently meeting 100% of the state’s daily demand of approximately five lakh cylinders. He added that while a waiting period of 6 to 8 days persists in certain areas, OMCs are putting in best efforts to further reduce this. Notably, essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions are being provided 100% of their supply requirements without any restrictions.

Responding to reports of delays exceeding 20 days in parts of suburban Chennai, Shri Sahney confirmed that a detailed analysis was conducted last night, stating that these areas will be addressed by tomorrow evening. To curb hoarding and malpractices, the state government has conducted over 10,000 sudden inspections, while OMCs have executed more than 1,500 unannounced raids across Tamil Nadu, leading to strict actions against defaulting distributors.

Highlighting India’s resilience during the ongoing 40-day global conflict, the Chairman noted that crude oil is now being procured from 41 different geographies, up from 25 previously. while LPG sourcing has also been expanded globally. He urged the public not to engage in panic buying, asserting that the nation has adequate inventories. Moving forward, the government’s focus remains on "availability, distribution, and affordability," while encouraging a proactive shift toward Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as a cleaner and cheaper alternative to traditional LPG. While acknowledging that transit through certain maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz is currently occurring at a "tricklish rate," he affirmed that energy security remains the top priority.
