BIS Conducts Enforcement Raid in Guwahati, Seizes Uncertified Plywood Products

Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Guwahati Branch Office, conducted an enforcement raid at the premises of M/s Pushpa Enterprise in Manpara, Guwahati, today. The action was taken based on specific information and subsequent investigation carried out by BIS.
During the operation, the establishment was found to be engaged in the sale and storage of plywood products, including plywood, concrete shuttering plywood, flush doors and block boards, of substandard quality. Instances of misuse of the BIS Standard Mark (ISI mark) and sale of uncertified products were also detected. A total of 3,533 items bearing spurious or unauthorized ISI markings were seized during the raid.
Further investigation revealed that the trader was dealing in products that were not certified by BIS, even though these items fall under mandatory certification. Plywood, block boards, concrete shuttering plywood and wooden flush door shutters are covered under Indian Standards IS 303:2024, IS 1659:2004, IS 4990:2024 and IS 2202 (Part 1): 2023 respectively, and have been notified for compulsory certification by the Government of India.
Action is being initiated against the offenders under Section 17(1) and 17(3) of the BIS Act 2016. The violation is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years or a fine not less than Rs. 2,00,000, or both. The Act provides that no person shall use or apply, or purport to use or apply, the Standard Mark or any imitation thereof in the manufacture, sale, distribution or offering of goods without a valid licence from BIS.
The Bureau has urged citizens to report any instances of misuse of the ISI mark or sale of products without mandatory BIS certification. Such information may be shared with the Head, Guwahati Branch Office, 2nd Floor, West End Building, Block Housefed Complex, Dispur, Guwahati, Assam – 781006, or through email at ghbo@bis.gov.in. The identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
