Mumbai, 27 March 2026

The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) is implementing major programmes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G), Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDUGKY), Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs), National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), and the Watershed Development Component of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY). These programmes aim to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life in rural areas by strengthening livelihood opportunities, ensuring wage employment, promoting self-employment, enhancing skills and entrepreneurship, developing infrastructure, and providing social assistance.

Under MGNREGS, as per NREGASoft data, the number of households in Maharashtra that availed employment during the last five financial years increased from 16.84 lakh in FY 2020–21 to 30.07 lakh in FY 2024–25. The scheme is being implemented across 28,305 Gram Panchayats in the State. Under PMAY-G, a total of 34.75 lakh houses have been sanctioned and 12.65 lakh houses have been completed in Maharashtra from FY 2020–21 to FY 2025–26 (as of 23 March 2026). Under WDC-PMKSY 2.0, 140 watershed development projects covering 5.26 lakh hectares have been sanctioned, benefiting around 1,48,074 farmers and generating 8,35,444 man-days of employment. PMGSY, which focuses on providing all-weather road connectivity to rural habitations, has significantly contributed to improvements in agriculture, health, education, and employment generation.

All these schemes are implemented in coordination with States and Union Territories, including Maharashtra. To ensure effective implementation, the Ministry has put in place a comprehensive multi-level monitoring and evaluation system, including Performance Review Committee meetings, DISHA meetings, National Level Monitors, Common Review Missions, concurrent evaluations, and impact assessment studies. State-specific reviews are conducted periodically, and corrective actions are taken based on findings.

The schemes are supported by end-to-end transaction-based Management Information Systems (MIS), enabling real-time monitoring. Works are geo-tagged and documented with time-stamped photographs, and data is made available in the public domain. Social audits are conducted for schemes such as MGNREGS and PMAY-G, and Ombudsmen have been appointed to address grievances. Grievance redressal mechanisms and regular coordination with State Governments ensure timely fund release and smooth implementation of rural development initiatives.

This information was provided by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Rural Development, Shri Kamlesh Paswan, in reply to questions in Rajya Sabha.
