A delegation of journalists from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh visited the Sairang Railway Station today as part of a media tour organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Jalandhar. The visit, marking the first day of the tour, allowed the delegation to witness the transformative impact of the Bairabi–Sairang new railway line. The journalists were warmly welcomed by a team of railway officials, including Traffic Inspectors Shri Gourav Yadav and Shri Sanjay Chanda and Station Masters Shri Gudu Kumar and Shri Maloy Nandi.

The Bairabi–Sairang project represents the fulfillment of a historic dream for Mizoram. Officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in September 2025, the 51.38 km line. The route includes 142 bridges—55 major and 87 minor—along with 5 road over-bridges and 8 road under-bridges.

One of the most striking features of this project is Bridge No. 196 (Old)/144 (New). Due to the steep valley topography near Sairang, the bridge reaches a staggering height of 114 meters from the riverbed level. Standing 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar, it is currently the highest pier bridge in the Indian Railways network. Constructed at a cost of 160 crore rupees, this bridge symbolizes the technical excellence required to bring rail connectivity to the hilly region.

Currently, the track supports vital long-distance and regional services, including the Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express (via Anand Vihar Terminal), the Aizawl–Kolkata Express, the Aizawl–Guwahati Express and the Sairang–Silchar Passenger. These services offer the people of Mizoram safe, efficient and cost-effective travel options, ending decades of geographical isolation and linking the state directly to the national rail grid.

This railway connection is more than just infrastructure; it is a lifeline that is set to revolutionize the lives and livelihoods of the people of Mizoram. By providing local farmers and businesses with access to larger national markets, the rail link fosters economic growth. It also enhances access to healthcare and education and creates new employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Furthermore, the line ensures the reliable and timely supply of essential commodities such as food grains and fertilizers, significantly improving regional accessibility and logistical efficiency.
