The Government of India has been conducting National Sample Surveys since 1950 to collect data on various socio-economic indicators using scientific sampling methods.The National Household Income Survey (NHIS) 2026, scheduled to begin in April 2026, aims to collect reliable and comprehensive data on household income across India. Scientifically designed pan-India estimates will be prepared for both rural and urban areas, covering multiple sources of income.

The survey will be conducted from April 2026 to March 2027 in all states and union territories using computer-assisted personal interviewing (CAPI).

The main objective of the National Household Income Survey (NHIS) is to understand the distribution of income across different regions and socio-economic groups, to estimate total and available household income, and to measure the extent of income inequality in the country. The data collected will be used by the relevant ministries/departments for planning and policy making.

The success of this survey depends largely on accurate information received from households. The NSO officials will contact the selected households to obtain necessary details such as demographic characteristics, educational and employment status. The confidentiality of this information will be ensured by NSO. Without the cooperation of households, it will not be possible to obtain the reliable data. Therefore, the government appeals to all stakeholders to extend all possible support to the officials of NSO engaged in this Survey and spare valuable time to provide accurate and complete information.

To discuss various aspects of the survey, a two-day conference for officials of the National Statistics Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, who are conducting the survey in the western region of Gujarat, will be held at the National Statistics Office, Ahmedabad on March 17 and 18, 2026. Senior officials from the Directorate of Economics and Statistics will also participate in the conference.

The conference will be inaugurated by Mr. Junaid Farooqui, Regional Head, Gujarat (Western Region), Deputy Director General, Field Operations Division (FOD). Shri Sridip Dey, Deputy Director from Household survey division (HSD), Kolkata will attend RTC as Observer. Mr. C.A. Bhatt, Joint Director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES), Government of Gujarat, and Mr. Ravishankar Verma, Deputy Director, and Ms. Shraddha Mule, Assistant Director, Field Operations Division (FOD), NSO, will also be present.
