On the occasion of its 90th anniversary, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) launched TISS Global, an internationally inclusive and innovative platform dedicated to examining and strengthening India’s growth and development within the broader social, cultural, economic, and geopolitical context.
TISS Global was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari, with Prof. Michael Pippenger, Vice President of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, United States, as the Special Guest.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Badri Narayan emphasised that as India continues to evolve as a major global actor, it is essential to critically reflect on its developmental pathways and share its experiences with the world in a spirit of mutual learning and solidarity. Reaffirming India’s expanding role in the global development landscape, Prof. Michael Pippenger underscored the importance of partnerships among educational institutions to collaboratively address pressing global challenges.
As part of the 90th anniversary celebrations, TISS Global will host a series of events providing a forum for participants to explore the social, cultural, and political dimensions of India’s development journey. The initiative seeks to bridge local knowledge systems with global frameworks, demonstrating how community-driven models and participatory approaches can contribute to equitable and sustainable development worldwide.

TISS Global aims to catalyse new pathways in global social science research by connecting research, policy, and practice. It promotes comparative scholarship, ethical and impact-driven collaborations, and participatory engagement that transcends borders. The platform also seeks to mainstream Indian perspectives within global knowledge hierarchies and advocate research agendas rooted in diverse, context-sensitive realities.
Beyond academic exchange, the initiative offers opportunities to engage with the richness of Indian culture and cuisine, providing deeper socio-cultural context to India’s development narrative and its growing resonance on the global stage.
The event also featured remarks by Prof. Madhushree Sekher, Chairperson, Office for International Affairs; Prof. Sunil Santha, Dean, Academic Affairs; Prof. Bipin Jojo, Dean, School of Social Work; and Dr. Narendra Mishra, Registrar, TISS, acknowledging the collective efforts behind this significant initiative.
