Jan Aushadhi Kendras in Ladakh

Posted On: 06 FEB 2026 1:39PM by PIB Delhi

Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana scheme, a total of 17,990 JAKs are open and functional across the country till 31.12.2025. Apart from these, 3,135 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been closed across the country till 31.12.2025. The State-wise /Union Territory-wise number of JAKs opened and closed across the country including UT of Ladakh is at Annexure.

With a view to further expand the coverage of the scheme, the Government has set a target to open 25,000 JAKs by March 2027. JAKs are opened by inviting applications from individual entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations, societies, trusts, firms, private companies, etc. Online applications have been invited from all districts of the country, including those in the UT of Ladakh, through the website www.janaushadhi.gov.in.

Further, a one-time special incentive of ₹2 lakh for setting up JAK is given for JAKs opened in the North-Eastern States, Himalayan areas, island territories and backward areas notified as Aspirational Districts by NITI Aayog, and to those JAKs that are opened by entrepreneurs of certain eligible categories, including ex-servicemen, divyang jan and members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Government has adopted franchise like model for opening of JAK. Being the franchise model the availability at local level is determined by demand and supply. It is the decision of the entrepreneur to continue or not in case of lower sales and revenue. Some of the other reasons for closure are the death of the JAK owner, vacation of the rented premises required by its landlord and the allottee or the pharmacist pursuing other economic or employment opportunities. The State Level Marketing Officer of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency of the scheme, establishes contact with JAKs whose sales are low with a view to help revive sales. PMBI handholds JAKs and organises workshops, peer learning from successful JAK owners and meeting with doctors from the local area for JAKs performing less well.

As on date, 200 pharmaceutical manufacturers are associated with PMBJP, for supplies of medicines, surgical equipment, nutraceuticals and ayurvedic products.

As per inputs provided by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India, the implementing agency of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, during the last two years, M/s ANG Lifescience India Limited and M/s Scientific Brain Nutraceutical Private Limited were blacklisted due to non-compliance with quality standards.
