Hon’ble members assume charge at GSTAT, Chennai Bench

The Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT), Chennai Bench, became operational from 22 January 2026 with the assumption of charge by the following Hon’ble Members:

  1. Shri Griesh Kumar Vaish, Hon’ble Judicial Member
     
  2. Shri Praveen Kumar Jain, Hon’ble Judicial Member
     
  3. Shri Shaik Khader Rahman, Hon’ble Technical Member (Centre)
     

The joining of the Hon’ble Members marks an important step in the operationalisation of the GST Appellate Tribunal in the State of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The Chennai Bench of GSTAT is expected to play a vital role in strengthening the dispute resolution mechanism under the Goods and Services Tax framework by ensuring timely and effective adjudication of GST-related appeals.

GST began in 2017 as 'One Nation, One Tax, One Market', now GSTAT evolves into 'One Nation, One Forum for Fairness and Certainty'. It is the biggest Tribunal in the country with 32 Benches, (one Principal Bench, 31 State Benches) at 45 locations and with 116 Hon’ble Members.

The GSTAT aims to establish strong appellate mechanism that instils the trust that justice will be swift and fair. It will ensure that every taxpayer's appeal will be heard, rights will be protected, with no delay in justice, it strengthens the trust between citizens and the Government

The commencement of the Chennai GSTAT Bench will significantly aid in reducing pendency of appeals and provide an accessible and efficient appellate forum for taxpayers as well as the tax administration.

The Bench shall function in accordance with the provisions of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, and other allied GST laws and rules framed thereunder.
