PROMOTION OF UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE

As on date, total 57 Unani educational institutes are functioning in the country. State-wise list of these educational institutes is attached at Annexure-I.
Ministry of Ayush is implementing Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Ayush Mission (NAM) through State/UT Governments and supporting their efforts by providing financial assistance for Co- location of Ayush units including Unani at Primary Health Centers/Community Health Centers, establishment of new Unani dispensaries, Up-gradation of Unani dispensaries/hospitals and supply of medicine to Unani health facilities for providing better access of health care services through Unani system of Medicines in different part of the Country including rural and semi-urban areas. Accordingly, the State/UT Governments may avail financial assistance by submitting suitable proposals through State Annual Action Plans (SAAPs) as per the provision of NAM guidelines.
Further, Ministry of Ayush has also setup the Central Council of Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), New Delhi and National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Bengaluru, for education and research in Unani system of medicine which includes development of new drugs as well as conducting clinical trials on scientific lines. A satellite institute of National Institute of Unani Medicine with 200-bedded hospital has been established at Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. A total number of 24 Institutes/Centres /Units are also working under the CCRUM across the country. State-wise details are placed at Annexure-II.
The details of steps being taken by Government to promote research and innovation in the Unani system of medicines are as follows:
Ministry of Ayush implements a Central Sector Scheme namely Ayurgyan Scheme with the aim to support Research & Innovation in Ayush including Unani through Extra Mural Research activities and Education by providing academic activities, training, capacity building etc. The scheme has three components viz. (i) Capacity Building & Continuing Medical Education (CME) in Ayush (ii) Research & Innovation in Ayush and (iii) Ayurveda Biology Integrated Health Research (ABIHR).
Ministry of Ayush implements the Central Sector Scheme namely Ayurswasthya Scheme with the aim to support creative and innovative proposals for establishment and up-gradation of both functions and facilities of reputed institutions to strengthen competencies of Ayush professionals in Education technology, Research & innovation and such other fields necessary for promotion of Ayush including Unani at national as well as international level through its component viz Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Ministry of Ayush also implements the Central Sector Scheme for Promotion of Information Education and Communication (IEC) in Ayush to create awareness regarding Ayush including Unani system of medicines. This scheme aims to reach out to all sections of the population across the country. It provides assistance for organizing National/ State Arogya Fairs, Yoga Fests/ Utsavs, Ayurveda Parvs, etc. The Ministry also undertakes Multi-Media, Print Media Campaigns for creating awareness about the Ayush systems including Unani.
Ministry of Ayush developed a central sector scheme namely the scheme for Promotion of International Cooperation in Ayush for the global promotion and recognition of Ayush system of medicine. Under this scheme, the Ministry provides support to various stakeholders to promote Ayush research, products & services, academics etc. at an International level.
Ministry of Ayush has supported World Health Organization (WHO) to establish a Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which has a strategic focus on evidence and learning, data and analytics, sustainability and equity, and innovation and technology to optimize the contribution of traditional medicine to global health and sustainable development. The 2nd WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit will take place from 17th - 19th December 2025 in New Delhi, India. This summit will focus on the theme "Restoring balance: The science and practice of health and well-being" and will address critical issues such as biodiversity protection, intellectual property rights, and the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence.
Further, in order to promote Unani system of medicine, CCRUM is also engaged in research initiatives in various parts of the country. These initiatives include pre-clinical & clinical research, drug standardization research, fundamental research, literary research, survey and cultivation of medicinal plants. The details of research activities are as follows:
- Ongoing clinical validation projects: 76
- Ongoing Randomized Controlled Trails (RCTs): 17
- Ongoing projects under Intra-Mural Research (IMR) scheme: 14
- Patents granted by Indian Patent Office (IPO): 19
- Research paper published: 3250
CCRUM organized Unani Day 2025 and International Conference on 11th & 12th February, 2025 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, India, on the theme of "Innovations in Unani Medicine for Integrative Health Solutions - A way forward".
Key activities included the release of:
- 08 CCRUM publications
- Launch of 01 teaser and 03 videos
- Launch of Unani Ahaar- Talbeena cookies, Talbeena flakes, Talbeena instant dalia and fortified barley water
- Transfer of patented technology developed by CCRUM to Industry
- Presentation of NABH and NABL accreditation certificates to CCRUM Peripheral Institutes
- Presentation of certificates of appreciation for best research papers
- Outstanding contribution in Unani Medicine to eminent Hakims
- Best performing Institute.
- The highlights of the conference were panel discussions with representatives from foreign countries, 04 keynote addresses and 09 scientific sessions with resource persons from reputed organizations and Institutions.
- Scientific Exhibition, showcasing innovations in the Unani and herbal pharmaceutical sectors.
Apart from these, in association with Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), NCISM is also implementing studentship program for Unani Research (SPUR) for undergraduate students to promote research aptitude. A studentship of Rs.25000 per month for two months is being given.
