The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Coimbatore Office organised Capsule Course on Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys Ingots for Remelting and Casting for General Engineering Purposes (IS 617: 2024) at the Indian Institute of Foundrymen (IIF) Auditorium in Coimbatore on 23 December 2025. About 30 representatives and quality control personnel from foundry industries based in Coimbatore participated in the programme.

 

The course was inaugurated with a welcome address by Shri V. Ramesh, Scientist-E/ Director, BIS and carried forward by Shri Prasanna Kumar K, ASO who briefed about BIS, its role and functions. The event was then led by Shri G. Vinith Kumar, Scientist-E/ Director, BIS who gave a detailed presentation on IS 617:2024 standards and testing methods.

Subsequently, Shri Suresh Kumar Gopalan, Scientist-C/ Deputy Director, explained the procedures for obtaining a BIS License, and Ms. Raghu Jyotsna Priya, Scientist-C/ Deputy Director, elaborated on the online services offered by the Bureau of Indian Standards.

During the session, suggestions and guidance were provided on foundry processes and quality improvements to be implemented in aluminium products.
