Sanchar Saathi App: Telecom Empowerment at Citizens’ Fingertips

CEIR initiative has blocked over 38.5 lakh handsets across India—including 1.28 lakh in Gujarat—and recovered more than 6.07 lakh devices nationwide since launch

Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Gujarat Licensed Service Area (LSA) organized a comprehensive Cybersecurity Awareness Seminar at Institute of Advanced Research, Gandhinagar on 26.09.2025, with active participation from more than 100 attendees, including students and faculty members. The session aimed to educate students on the growing threats of cyber frauds in today’s digital age and promote responsible digital practices.

 

Ajay Kothari, Director (DIU), DoT introduced participants to the Sanchar Saathi Portal (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in)/App, an initiative by the DoT to empower mobile users and enhance digital safety awareness. Sanchar Saathi provides various citizen centric services as below under its umbrella aimed at safeguarding user privacy, mitigating telecom-related fraud, and empowering subscribers with enhanced control and transparency.

  1. CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register):
    Enables recovery and blocking of lost or stolen mobile devices across all telecom networks.
  2. TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection): Allows users to check the number of mobile connections registered under their name and report any unauthorized or unrequired connections.
  3. CHAKSU (Report Suspected Fraud Communications):
    Facilitates reporting of suspicious or unsolicited communications received via call, SMS, or WhatsApp, which may be linked to cybercrime attempts.

The seminar saw active participation from students who engaged enthusiastically throughout the session. It featured an interactive format, including a live demonstration that helped students better understand cybersecurity measures. Additionally, students explored the Sanchar Saathi app firsthand, checking all its modules to familiarize themselves with tools designed to enhance digital safety.

Since its launch, the CEIR initiative has blocked over 1.28 lakh mobile handsets, traced more than 75,500, and recovered around 31,450 devices, achieving a recovery rate of approximately 42% in Gujarat state. Across India, over 38.5 lakh handsets have been blocked and about 6.07 lakh mobile recovered. Meanwhile, under the “Mobile Connections in Your Name” service, citizens from Gujarat, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Daman & Diu have made more than 11.18 lakh requests, leading to the disconnection of around 6.76 lakh unauthorized connections. Nationwide, the service has received 2.49 crore requests and disconnected around 1.6 crore mobile connections.

The seminar provided in-depth insights into the prevalent modus operandi of cybercriminals, highlighting the various tactics used to exploit individuals through mobile phones, emails, and laptops. The session also emphasized the importance of promptly reporting cybercrimes, and attendees were informed about the following official resources:
