20th International Symposium on Metal Ions 2025 Concludes in Mumbai with a Call for Sustainable, Interdisciplinary Science

Mumbai, 22 September 2025 —The 20th International Symposium on Metal Ions in Biology & Medicine — Recent Advances in Oral Medicine & Radiology, Environmental and Public Health — concluded on 21 September 2025 at the Nehru Science Centre (NSC), Worli, Mumbai. The two-day symposium held at NSC Mumbai witnessed vibrant scientific exchange, international collaboration, and a strong emphasis on ethical and environmentally sustainable research.

Organized with the objective of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, the symposium brought together over 240 delegates from countries including the United States and Russia, alongside leading Indian researchers and clinicians. The event underscored the growing international relevance of metal ion research and its applications in health, environment, and public policy.

Delivering the inaugural address, Symposium Chairperson Dr. Sunali Khanna urged participants to bridge the gap between innovation and responsibility. “We need science with a soul, and this symposium has proven that such science is possible,” she stated.
The programme featured a wide array of scientific sessions, oral and poster presentations, and plenary discussions covering topics such as:
- Cancer diagnostics and therapeutics
- Nanotechnology and engineered nanomaterials
- Oral health challenges and radiological advances
- Environmental safety and public health strategies
- Legal reforms in research and countering tobacco industry interference
A special session for school students on scientific presentation techniques was also held, highlighting the importance of nurturing future researchers.




International faculty included eminent experts such as Prof. (Dr.) Paul B. Tchounwou (USA) and Prof. (Dr.) Anatoly Skalny (Russia), who joined distinguished Indian scientists from premier institutions and hospitals.
In her concluding remarks, Dr. Khanna emphasized that “the future lies in interdisciplinary research and a deep commitment to health and environmental sustainability.”
The symposium reaffirmed Mumbai’s position as a global hub for scientific dialogue and innovation. Delegates departed with renewed inspiration to pursue research that is not only cutting-edge but also ethically grounded and environmentally conscious.
Nehru Science Centre is among the four National level Science Museums in National Council of Science Museums, under Union Ministry of Culture, working as the Western Zone Headquarters with four science centres in Nagpur, Bhopal, Dharampur and Goa under its umbrella caters to the people in the Western part of India. As a part of its activities, the Centre organizes regular extensive science education programmes, activities and competitions for the benefit of the common people and students in particular.
