The Department of Ophthalmology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, has taken a significant step forward in eye care with the launch of state-of-the-art and advanced cataract, vitreoretinal, paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus surgeries. With a daily outpatient turnover of nearly 150 patients, the department has already established itself as a key centre for eye care in the region.
Cataract surgery, a procedure to remove the cloudy lens of the eye and replace it with an artificial one, is one of the most common and effective surgical procedures worldwide. With the introduction of phacoemulsification cataract surgery patients with vision impairment due to cataracts will get safe, modern, and highly effective treatment locally, improving vision and quality of life.
Equally transformative is the availability of vitreoretinal surgeries, critical for managing conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and macular disorders—sight-threatening diseases that earlier required patients to travel outside the state for advanced care.
The department has also commenced strabismus (squint eye) surgeries, benefiting both children and adults with eye misalignment issues, improving not only vision and depth perception but also appearance and confidence.
Backed by a team of four highly qualified faculty members with expertise in cataract, retina, and paediatric ophthalmology, AIIMS Guwahati now offers comprehensive diagnostic and surgical solutions under one roof. This marks a major milestone in making advanced, specialized eye care accessible to patients across the Northeast.
