Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) [AYJNISHD(D)], Bandra (W), Mumbai, celebrated the 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm, in alignment with this year’s national theme – “Naya Bharat”.

The celebrations commenced at 10:00 AM with the hoisting of the National Flag by the esteemed Chief Guest, Shri Alok Kejriwal, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The gathering was warmly welcomed by Director, AYJNISHD(D), Dr. Suman Kumar who also felicitated the Chief Guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Director, AYJNISHD(D),Dr. Suman Kumar remarked, “Independence Day is a moment to pay tribute to the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and to reaffirm our commitment to nation-building.” He also highlighted the innovative initiatives of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, such as the ‘DIVYA Voice Bot’ and ‘Divya WhatsApp Chat Bot’. These AI-powered platforms have been developed to disseminate information about departmental schemes and programmes, making them more accessible to the public.

Shri Alok Kejriwal, a distinguished pioneer in accessibility and founder of ISH News, has made inspirational contributions in making news and entertainment accessible to the Deaf community. In his address, he emphasised the importance of safeguarding the hard-earned freedom and working collectively towards an inclusive and progressive India.

The participants and attendees included officials, guests, students, individuals with speech, language, and hearing impairments, and their families, making it a truly memorable celebration of unity and patriotism.
