South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur, Launches Folk Dance Workshops Across Madhya Pradesh

  • Rai and Panthi Folk Dance Training Workshop inaugurated in Jabalpur on July 26 2025
  • Baiga Karma Tribal Dance Workshop to be held in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, from August 1–6, 2025
  • Similar workshops planned in other participating states in the future

The South Central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC), Nagpur, under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in collaboration with Maharashtra Shikshan Mandal, Jabalpur, has launched a series of traditional dance workshops across Madhya Pradesh to promote and conserve India’s diverse folk dance traditions.

The 'Rai and Panthi Folk Dance Training Workshop' was inaugurated in Jabalpur on July 26, 2025. The lamp-lighting inaugural was graced by Assistant Director (Program), SCZCC Nagpur, Mr. Deepak Kulkarni; Secretary, Maharashtra Shikshan Mandal, Mr. Pramod Pathak; Member, Centenary Year Committee, Maharashtra Shikshan Mandal, Jabalpur, Mr. Anil Rajurkar; Member, Centenary Year Committee, Maharashtra Shikshan Mandal, Jabalpur, Mr. Deepak Ubale; and Principal, Maharashtra College, Mr. Dilip Singh Hajari. The vote of thanks was delivered by President, Maharashtra Shikshan Mandal, Dr. Jayant Tankhiwale, and the program was compered by Coordinator, Mr. Pradyumna Kayande.

The 'Rai Folk Dance Workshop' is being conducted by Rai Folk Dance Artist from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Santosh Pandey, who is instructing students in the intricate techniques of the Rai folk dance tradition. Meanwhile, the 'Panthi Folk Dance Workshop' is being led by Panthi Folk Dance Artist from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, Mr. Dilip Banjare, and has received an enthusiastic response from student participants. Over 150 students are enrolled in these six-day workshops, which conclude on July 31, 2025.

From August 1 to 6, 2025, Chada village in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh, will host the Baiga Karma Tribal Dance Workshop, under the guidance of Padma Shri and Baiga Karma Tribal Dance Artist, Mr. Arjun Singh Dhurve, a celebrated cultural figure renowned for his lifelong contribution to tribal arts.

All workshops are being held as part of the School Connect Programme, with the objective of engaging youth and promoting India's indigenous art forms. Similar workshops are proposed in other participating states in the coming months.
