The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India, is set to launch two new nationwide surveys under the 80th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), to be conducted from July 2025 to June 2026. These include the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES) which aims to collect comprehensive data on domestic tourism expenditure, covering household characteristics, visitor profiles, and trip-related details of overnight domestic travel. The data will support the preparation of the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT). TSA helps track the economic contribution of tourism and informs global metrics such as the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) reported to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

It also includes the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) which will focus on the travel behavior of individuals within households, including travel frequency, modes of transport, trip purposes, and use of public transportation. Insights from NHTS will help in identifying gaps in transit systems, improving accessibility, and guiding infrastructure planning.

To equip field staff for these new surveys, the NSO (Field Operations Division) organized a three-day Regional Training Camp (RTC) from June 25 to 27, 2025, at Hotel Palacio, Khanapara, Guwahati. The training aimed at preparing officers and officials with the methodology and tools for effective data collection.

In addition, the NSO will also conduct a Pilot Study on Construction Activities in Unincorporated Sector Establishments and Households from July to December 2025. This study will collect essential data for estimating Gross Value Output (GVO) and Gross Value Added (GVA) related to construction work by unincorporated establishments—such as proprietary, partnership, and cooperative entities—and by households for personal use.

Ahead of this pilot survey, a two-day Regional Training Camp was held on June 23 and 24, 2025, at Rohika, AAU International Guest House, Khanapara, Guwahati.

During the inauguration sessions of both training camps, Shri N. Mohan Das Singh, Director, Zonal Office (North Eastern Zone) and Regional Head, NSO (FOD) Guwahati, emphasized the significance of these new initiatives. He highlighted the importance of scientific sampling methods and how the data will be vital for national-level planning and policy formulation by key stakeholders.

The NSO appeals to all citizens to extend their cooperation to official surveyors during these data collection exercises. All information collected will remain strictly confidential and used exclusively for statistical purposes. These surveys will play a crucial role in shaping development strategies and policies that serve the broader interests of the nation.
