VAMNICOM and CICTAB Launch "Innovations and Agribusiness Management" Training Program for Defense Personnel

In a significant step towards fostering rural development, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance in the agribusiness sector, the Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management (VAMNICOM), in collaboration with the Centre for International Cooperation & Training in Agricultural Banking (CICTAB), Pune, has launched a two-month training program titled "Innovations and Agribusiness Management".
This specially designed program is aimed at preparing 40 officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force for post-retirement opportunities in the agribusiness sector. The participants include 25 officers from the Army, 7 from the Navy, and 8 from the Air Force.
The training program, scheduled from 26th May 2025 to 18th July 2025, was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Shantanu Ghosh, Registrar, VAMNICOM, Dr. Amit Borkar and Dr. Dhananjay Gaikwad, Assistant Professors at VAMNICOM. The inaugural session featured a special address by CDR Rahil Rai, Joint Director, DRZ (South), who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Dr. Shantanu Ghosh extended a warm welcome and felicitated CDR Rahil Rai, expressing gratitude for his presence and support. This was followed by a briefing by Dr. Dhananjay Gaikwad, who provided insights into the course curriculum, objectives, and expected outcomes of the training.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ghosh emphasized that the course is meticulously crafted to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among defense personnel in the agribusiness landscape. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in equipping ex-servicemen with the tools and knowledge to become self-reliant contributors to India’s agricultural economy.
In his keynote address, CDR Rahil Rai commended the initiative, noting that the training would not only create new career pathways for retiring defense personnel but also contribute to national development through agribusiness ventures.
The program will encompass a comprehensive blend of practical workshops, case studies, field visits, and interactive classroom sessions conducted by leading experts from industry and academia. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort to align the potential of India’s disciplined defense personnel with the dynamic needs of the agricultural and cooperative sectors. The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Amit Borkar.
About VAMNICOM:
VAMNICOM (Vaikunth Mehta National Institute of Cooperative Management) a National Institute under the Ministry of Cooperation having a core mandate for stakeholders in farm and nonfarm sectors focusing on the livestock, dairy & fisheries sector. In the year 1964, a high-level group appointed by the Government of India under the Chairmanship of late Prof. D. R. Gadgil to assess the training needs of the cooperative sector recommended the setting up of a National Institute. This Institute was envisaged to undertake the training of senior personnel in the cooperative institutions/departments, conduct fundamental/applied research and provide consultancy services, organize courses in business management for senior personnel in cooperative business organizations and train the youth on various facets of Management.
About Directorate General Resettlement (DGR):
The Directorate General Resettlement (DGR) is an Inter Service organization functioning directly under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare (Ministry of Defence). In order to maintain a youthful profile of the Armed Forces, approximately 60,000 service personnel are retired/released every year at comparatively young age. Majority of the service personnel at the time of retirement are at an age where they have numerous unfinished domestic responsibilities, which necessitate their taking up a second occupation. DGR assists Ex-Servicemen to train and acquire additional skills with a strong emphasis on evolving requirements of corporate and industry and facilitate their resettlement through a second career.
