The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, through its Mumbai Branch Office-II, successfully conducted a “Manak Samvad” — a structured and interactive training session aimed at newly inducted licensees. The session was held on 4th April 2025 in physical mode at the Western Regional Office (WRO), Powai, Mumbai.

This significant initiative was launched to strengthen the foundation of newly licensed stakeholders by providing them with in-depth knowledge on the operational procedures of BIS licenses. The programme was meticulously curated to support stakeholders in understanding the intricacies of the BIS certification process, encouraging them to adopt best practices for quality assurance, standard compliance, and consumer trust.
The training covered a wide range of essential topics critical for the smooth and effective functioning of BIS licensees. Participants were given a comprehensive orientation on the Manak online portal, with a step-by-step demonstration to empower them in managing their license-related activities digitally and efficiently. The session also introduced participants to BIS-recognized laboratories, helping them understand their role in product testing and how to coordinate for sample submissions.
The session included a detailed explanation of the Grant of Licence (GoL) and Surveillance Sampling (SuS) guidelines, ensuring that participants were well-versed in compliance mechanisms and post-certification requirements. Additionally, clarity was provided on the interpretation and implementation of Quality Control Orders (QCOs), which are crucial for manufacturers and importers working under the Compulsory Certification Scheme. Participants were also introduced to BIS’s outreach initiatives like “Know Your Standards” and “BIS Care app.”
To reinforce the learnings from the session, each in-person participant was provided with a 4 GB pen drive containing all relevant training materials, presentations, and user manuals. This ensured that the licensees would have continued access to the information and could refer back to it whenever needed.

The session witnessed the participation of 21 newly inducted licensees from various sectors. Participants appreciated the clarity, relevance, and user-friendly nature of the session and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact directly with BIS officials and clarify their queries.
This training initiative reflects BIS’s continued efforts to foster a culture of quality, transparency, and regulatory compliance. Mumbai Branch Office-II remains committed to empowering stakeholders through regular capacity-building programmes, ensuring that every licensee is well-equipped to uphold and promote the highest standards in their respective fields.
