Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS), Mumbai on 19th February 2025, as a part of three-day official visit, marking his first visit to India since assuming office in 2024. This visit underscores the IMO's strong commitment to collaborating with key maritime nations like India in addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities in the global shipping industry.

Mr. Dominguez visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), where he had firsthand insights into the complexities of port operations and the opportunities for sustainable port development. He held engaging discussions with the port’s leadership and touring key facilities to understand JNPA’s pivotal role in the maritime ecosystem. The discussions were focused on fostering sustainability in port operations, exploring innovative solutions for decarbonizing shipping and implementing environmentally sound maritime practices. His visit aligns with IMO’s broader vision of promoting green shipping and enhancing maritime sustainability. The IMO Secretary General was accompanied by Mr. Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping, Mr. Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairman JNPA and other officials from JNPA and DGS.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez paid homage at the Seafarers War Memorial, recognizing the sacrifices and contributions of Indian seafarers to maritime history. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and dedication of sailors who served during times of war. As a mark of respect and remembrance, Mr. Dominguez laid a wreath at the Seafarers War Memorial.. Trainee seafarers from T.S. Rahman presented the IMO Secretary General with a guard of honor. The IMO Secretary General was accompanied by Mr. Shyam Jagannathan, IAS, Director General of Shipping and Capt. (Dr.) Daniel J. Joseph, Deputy Director General of Shipping and Mr. Milind Kandalgaonkar, General Secretary-cum-Treasurer of NUSI.

In his New Year’s address earlier this year, Secretary General Dominguez outlined the IMO's priorities for 2025, reaffirming the organization's unwavering dedication to decarbonizing shipping and protecting ocean health. His visit to India serves as a testament to this commitment, fostering stronger collaboration between India and IMO in advancing sustainable maritime initiatives.
