The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office-II, in association with the Mira-Bhayander and Kalyan Jewellers Associations, conducted two Half-Day Awareness Programs on BIS Certification, Hallmarking and the BIS CARE Application on 27th and 28th January 2025. Over 175 jewellers attended the programs, which focused on educating jewellers about the importance of quality assurance in the jewellery industry and consumer protection.

At the Mira Road session on 27th January, the program was led by Shri Aman Singh (Sc.C), Shri Pratik Meshram (SSA), and Shri Naresh Harad (HMR). The speakers emphasized the role of BIS standards in ensuring the quality of jewellery and building consumer trust. Shri Aman Singh provided an in-depth explanation of the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) system and conducted a live demonstration of the BIS CARE app. President of the Mira-Bhayander Jewellers Association, Shri Bhavarlal Mehta, highlighted the necessity for jewellers to sell only HUID-compliant jewellery in accordance with the Mandatory Hallmarking Order (QCO). Key discussions included compliance procedures, the accountability for failed samples, and the corrective measures jewellers must follow.

On 28th January, the Kalyan session focused on BIS standards for purity and consumer trust. Shri Mahendar Singh Jakhad (Sc.D), Shri Anurag (Sc.C), Shri Pratik Meshram (SSA), and Shri Naresh Harad (HMR) led discussions, elaborating on the HUID system’s role in ensuring transparency and authentication followed by a live demonstration of the BIS CARE app. The President of the Kalyan Jewellers Association urged the jewellers to adhere to the mandatory HUID hallmarking for all jewellery.

Both programs featured interactive Q&A sessions addressing concerns regarding sample testing failures, HUID record maintenance and compliance issues. The sessions reinforced the importance of the Quality Control Order issued on 23rd June 2021, which mandates HUID and hallmarking. This regulation makes hallmarking compulsory in districts where at least one Assaying and Hallmarking Centre is available.
These awareness initiatives served to deepen understanding of BIS regulations. By promoting compliance, BIS aims to help jewellers maintain high-quality products that build consumer trust. BIS also encouraged consumers to use the BIS CARE app to verify the authenticity of jewellery marked with the HUID.
