Empowering Workplaces: AYJNISHD (D) Hosts Session on Fostering and Protecting Healthy Dissent

Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) [AYJNISHD (D)] hosted a transformative program on ‘Fostering and Protecting Healthy Dissent in the Workplace’ today (15th January 2025). This collaborative initiative, organized by the AYJNISHD (D), Mumbai, in partnership with the U.S. Consulate General, Mumbai, brought together key stakeholders to promote inclusive communication and constructive conflict resolution in the workplace.
 

 

Ms. Merri Hanson, a distinguished mediator, trainer, conflict coach, and organizational consultant, conducted the session. Addressing the group of audience from various walks of life in empowering persons with disabilities, she stressed the need to express opinion, even if they collide with the others during work in institutional settings, complex situations and systems. This means, making the first move towards listening with a goal to understand the other and providing respect in work place.  Answering a question on dealing with personal ideologies that cause dissent, she stressed the need to have reasonable accommodation, and platforms for redressal of problems faced during dissent in work place even for persons with disabilities. Ms Hanson stressed the need for respectful working environment where women are safer and participate in work following the law of the land, leading to economic development in various domain areas. Ms. Merri Hanson, is a globally recognized mediator, trainer, conflict coach, and Director of Peninsula Mediation & ADR.  

The program underscored the importance of embracing healthy dissent to create empowered and inclusive workplaces, including persons with disabilities. It offered participants tools to enhance communication, resolve conflicts empathetically, and address challenges with clarity—particularly in organizations working with Divyangjans.

The program represented AYJNISHD’s commitment to fostering working environments where open dialogue and constructive conflict resolution are means to agree on common points of interest, while making effort towards empowerment of persons with disabilities. AYJNISHD (D) is an autonomous body under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
