The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science & Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram has marked an exceptional year in 2024, with ground-breaking achievements across scientific research, technological advancements, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. As a key player in India’s R&D landscape, the institute has contributed significantly to solving global challenges and strengthening the nation's position in scientific innovation.
CSIR-NIIST scientists achieved a remarkable 35.6% efficiency in indoor light harvesting with dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), positioning the institute at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions. This achievement promises to revolutionize energy usage, reducing reliance on disposable batteries and mitigating environmental pollution. Further advancing sustainability, CSIR-NIIST unveiled a safe, sustainable technology for biomedical waste management during the Biomedical Waste Management Conclave. The institute's efforts in reducing the environmental footprint were also highlighted through its leadership in the National Mission on Sustainable Packaging Solutions, which aims for a net-zero future. The unveiling of self-powered air quality monitors at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TIA) demonstrated CSIR-NIIST’s commitment to enhancing public health through innovation.
CSIR-NIIST has seen remarkable progress in fostering collaborations and licensing technologies. The institute signed an MoU for the commercialization of “Jaivam,” a microbial consortium designed to enhance composting, which will significantly benefit the agricultural sector. Additionally, its collaboration with a clean-tech startup to develop biodegradable tableware from agricultural waste has set a new standard for eco-friendly products with a shelf-life of up to 12 months. The institute has also made strides in wastewater management by developing and installing a Sustainable Bioenergy-based Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in Kasaragod, alongside launching innovative solutions such as NOWA, a patented technology that treats organic wastewater from hotels and restaurants. These efforts align with CSIR-NIIST’s goal to promote resource recovery and environmental sustainability.
2024 also saw the establishment of a dedicated Innovation Centre at CSIR-NIIST, aimed at supporting tech-driven startups and fostering knowledge-based entrepreneurship. The centre’s inauguration by Dr. Krishna Ella of Bharat Biotech highlights CSIR-NIIST’s growing role as a national hub for translational research. In the realm of education, CSIR-NIIST witnessed a significant increase in doctoral research program enrollments, reinforcing its status as a leading academic institution. The institute also played a central role in enhancing community engagement and fostering scientific curiosity through its initiatives like Jigyasa and Skill Development.
CSIR-NIIST achieved a 175% increase in its R&D budget, reflecting robust growth and increased investment in innovation. The institute’s revenue from technology transfers surged by 260%, underscoring the commercial potential of its research outcomes. The year was also marked by prestigious accolades, including the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar awarded to CSIR-NIIST Director Dr. C. Anandharamakrishnan. The institute forged new alliances with key national organizations, such as the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and AIIMS, to advance strategic materials and medical technologies.
CSIR-NIIST demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by actively participating in disaster relief efforts during the Wayanad landslides, preparing and distributing food supplies. Additionally, the institute emphasized the importance of protecting traditional knowledge during its World IPR Day workshop, further underscoring its role in promoting sustainable development.
As CSIR-NIIST moves toward its Golden Jubilee in 2025, its groundbreaking work in sustainable technologies, research collaborations, and social initiatives solidifies its position as a leader in India’s scientific landscape. With a clear vision for the future, CSIR-NIIST continues to contribute to national growth, environmental preservation, and technological excellence, marking a year of tremendous accomplishments.
