The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) inviting Indian industries to participate in setting up 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSR) for captive power generation. These compact, Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) are designed to provide a sustainable, low-carbon energy solution for hard-to-abate industries, enabling them to decarbonize their operations.

The Bharat Small Reactors are known for their impeccable safety and performance records, making them an ideal option for industries seeking reliable and environmentally friendly energy sources. By utilizing BSR technology, industries stand to benefit from significant savings on carbon emission-related taxes, which will improve their competitiveness in global markets. The initiative is in line with the government’s push for decarbonization and clean energy transition, as outlined in the Union Budget for 2024-25.

The reactors, with a capacity of 220 MW each, are specifically tailored to meet the power needs of industrial units, reducing their dependence on conventional power sources and enhancing overall energy efficiency. The reactors are planned to be set up with private sector investment, operating within the existing legal framework and approved business models
