Tele-Density and Wi-Fi Speed in the Country

Posted On: 19 DEC 2024 3:46PM by PIB Delhi

The tele-density in each State as on 30.06.2024 is given in Annexure. The percentage of the population covered by mobile network is 99.21 per cent and the percentage of population covered by at least a 3G mobile network is 99.0 per cent as on 31.05.2024. The Wi-Fi speed experienced by subscribers depends on various factors, including Wi-Fi network standards, Internet Service Provider (ISP), plan type, technology used etc. and is not calculated State-wise.

Mobile services in an area are provided by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) based on their techno-commercial viability. Mobile coverage for inhabited uncovered villages is provided by Government and the Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) in a phased manner. Further, Government is implementing various schemes / projects under Digital Bharat Nidhi (erstwhile USOF) for expansion of telecom connectivity through installation of mobile towers in rural, remote and hilly areas of the country including Odisha. The details of ongoing DBN projects for expansion of mobile services in Odisha are as follows:

  1. Saturation of 4G mobile services in uncovered villages
  2. Left Wing Extremism Phase-II
  3. 7287 uncovered villages in Aspirational District
  4. Left Wing Extremism Phase-I upgradation project.

In addition, BharatNet project (earlier known as National Optical Fiber Network) being funded by Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN) is being implemented in a phased manner to provide broadband connectivity to all Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the country. Amended BharatNet Programme has been approved by Cabinet on 04.08.2023, for up-gradation of existing network of BharatNet Phase-I and Phase-II, creation of network in balance 42,000 GPs (approx.), Operation and Maintenance for 10 years and utilization at the total cost of Rs. 1,39,579 crores.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development,    Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
