Cycling for a Greener Future: Fit India Cycling Drive Reaches 1,000 Locations Across the Country

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, inaugurated the ‘Fit India Cycling Drive’ at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, marking the beginning of a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting cycling as a healthy, sustainable mode of transport. Speaking at the event, Dr. Mansukh remarked, “We have to bring the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat to reality. Cycling is the solution to pollution and a key contributor to sustainability.” The Fit India Cycling Drive is being held across 1,000 locations nationwide, engaging over 50,000 participants. The initiative aims to foster community engagement, fitness, and environmental consciousness.

On December 17, 2024, the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence Mumbai organized an 8-km cycling event at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which brought together 150 participants, including coaches, officers, and staff. Prominent attendees such as Mamta Prabhu, an International Table Tennis Coach and Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist and Raj Singh Chikara, a Dronacharya Awardee and Wrestling Coach, joined the event to emphasize the importance of cycling for fitness and its positive impact on the environment. Forest Officers Vishal Sawant and Mukesh Sonawane also attended, highlighting the role of cycling in reducing pollution.

In addition to the Mumbai event, the Fit India Cycling Drive was conducted at 11 locations under the jurisdiction of SAI RC Mumbai. The Fit India Cycling Drive saw widespread participation across various locations in Maharashtra and Goa, including prominent centers such as Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in Silvassa, NCOE Aurangabad, and Kolhapur Zilla Rastriya Talim Sang in Rashiwade, Kolhapur. MIT ADT University and Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune also hosted successful cycling events, engaging the local community in promoting fitness and sustainability. In Goa, both SAI STC Ponda and SAI STC Pedem joined the nationwide initiative, while Khandesh College Education Society's Eklavya Krida Sankul in Jalgaon participated in the movement as well. Additionally, the Baglan Cycle Foundation in Satana and Nashik Cycle Foundation in Nashik contributed to the success of the drive.These events collectively drew over 1,600 participants, including athletes, students, parents, local cycling clubs, and volunteers from My Bharat.

The Fit India Cycling Drive stands as a testament to the movement’s mission of fostering fitness, environmental consciousness, and community unity. With its widespread participation, the initiative reaffirms India’s commitment to a healthier, greener future in line with the Fit India Movement.
