BIS Enforcement Action Against M/s. Paresh Jewellers for Violation of Hallmarking Standards

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India, established under the BIS Act 2016. The main activities of BIS are Standard Formulation, Product Certification, Laboratory Testing & System Certification.BIS is contributing to the national economy by providing safe, reliable and quality goods, minimizing health hazards to consumers, protecting the environment etc.The standards and product certification schemes of BIS apart from benefiting the consumer and industries, also support various public policies especially product safety, consumer protection, food safety, environment protection, building and construction etc.As per BIS Act, 2016, No person shall manufacture, import, distribute, sell, hire, lease, store or exhibit for sale any such goods which is covered under Violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 without BIS hallmark, except under a valid licence. In a prompt response to information received regarding violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020, a team of officials from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Mumbai Branch Office-II, conducted an Enforcement raid on 25th November 2024, at M/s. Paresh Jewellers, Ground floor, Shop No. 4, House No. 13, Lane No.32, Village Kalyan , Kalyan (West) Thane- 421301. During the raid it was found that the jewellery shop was storing and selling without BIS hallmark and marking on gold jewellery/articles with old scheme of four marks.Substantial quantity of such Gold jewellery, without BIS hallmark & marking on gold jewellery/articles with old scheme of four marks found during the raid were seized under violation of Section 15 of BIS Act 2016.The violation of Section 15 of BIS Act 2016 is punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine of minimum Rs. 1,00,000 or both as per BIS Act 2016. Action is being initiated to file a case in the court of law for the offence.

The General Public is advised to provide any information to the Office with regard to violation of Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artefacts Order, 2020 in the interest of public health, safety, prevention of deceptive trade practices and cheating. Information on misuse of BIS Registration mark/Hallmark for gold and selling gold jewellery/artefacts without BIS licence coming to the notice of the general public may be brought to the notice of BIS at the address - Mumbai Branch Office-II, Bureau of Indian Standards, 5th Floor, CETTM complex, Hiranandani Gardens, Powai, Mumbai – 400076 or through the mobile app -'BIS CARE’.
