The Union Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, Shri Pabitra Margherita, visited the Central Silk Board’s Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (MESSO) in Guwahati toady, highlighting the government’s commitment to the advancement of India’s sericulture sector. MESSO, with its network of 13 field units across Northeast India and Tamil Nadu, is an essential pillar in the production of high-quality Muga and Eri silkworm seeds, playing a vital role in fostering growth and innovation in sericulture.

During his visit, Shri Margherita praised the transformation of sericulture in the Northeast, particularly the production and cultivation of Muga and Eri silk, which has evolved from a traditional tribal craft into a promising industry. This evolution has opened up substantial livelihood opportunities for rural and tribal communities, especially for women artisans who play an instrumental role in the sector. The Minister acknowledged the strategic efforts of the Central Silk Board, whose research and development initiatives, backed by the Government of India, have driven significant advancements. These initiatives, he noted, have had a tangible impact on the socio-economic conditions of ethnic communities engaged in sericulture, improving their quality of life while preserving cultural heritage.

Shri Margherita commended MESSO Guwahati's forward-thinking initiatives, particularly its efforts to expand Muga culture beyond Assam into cooler regions, such as Kalimpong in West Bengal and select areas of Uttarakhand. By introducing Muga culture to these zones, MESSO aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on silk production and diversify production bases to ensure a sustainable supply of quality Muga silk.

The Minister emphasized the need for MESSO to continue enhancing seed production efficiency across all Basic Seed Producing units dedicated to Muga and Eri culture in the Northeast, aligning with the growing national demand for these unique silk varieties. He urged MESSO to prioritize the quality and scalability of its seed production processes to ensure that India’s Muga and Eri silk meet both domestic and international demands, thereby strengthening India’s footprint in the global silk market.

In addition, Shri Margherita underscored the importance of collaboration between central and state departments to facilitate the sustainable growth of the silk industry. He highlighted the potential for sericulture, along with the handloom and handicrafts sectors, to generate employment and empower rural communities. According to the Minister, supporting traditional craftsmanship not only sustains livelihoods but also preserves India's rich heritage, positioning it as a key contributor to the nation’s broader socio-economic development goals.
