Webinar on Role of Safai Doot in keeping cities clean and role of waste segregation at citizen level concludes

Hidden consequences of large amount of waste are far more severe than the heaps of waste that we find in cities. Various environmental disasters like melting of the ice on Arctic cap are examples of such hidden consequences of unbridled waste generation that is happening in cities, said Amogh Bhongle of s SWaCH (Solid WAste Collection and Handling) cooperative organisation of Pune.
He was speaking in a webinar organised by Central Bureau of Communication on the topic of role of garbage collectors in keeping the cities clean and the importance of waste segregation at citizen level. Students of Shri Shahu Highschool & Junior College, Kagal took part in this webinar in physical mode.
SWaCH Cooperative is the largest Organisation of garbage collectors in the country and it reaches 10 lakh houses and collects 1400 tonnes of garbage a day and manages to do 95% segregation at source level
Amogh further informed that for waste collectors this segregation of garbage does not stop at wet and dry waste but it also includes sanitary waste and household harmful waste. Garbage is segregated in multiple plastic categories also.
He further informed that life of waste collector is not easy as citizens refuse to help them by declining them space to hold and segregate the waste. Waste is considered as something dirty which has to discarded as soon as possible.
SWaCH has also got the distinction of collecting 30 tons of reusable goods which make the recycling of usable goods possible and create big impact on the problem of garbage issue with its activities SWACH has managed to reduce carbon footprint by 8 lakh metric tone.
