Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrates World Standards Day 2024 [Manak Mahotsav] in Chennai

Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office conducted the World Standards Day 2024 Programme [Manak Mahotsav] on 14 October 2024 (Monday) at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai. Industry experts, Government Officials and stakeholders of BIS attended the function to celebrate World Standards Day.

Smt. G Bhavani, Senior Director & Head BIS Chennai Branch Office in her welcome address informed that every year on October 14, the members of the ISO, IEC and ITU join together to celebrate the World Standards Day, which is a means of paying tribute to the collaborative efforts of the thousands of experts worldwide, who develop the voluntary technical agreements that are published as international standards.

Shri Praveen Khanna, Scientist- G & Deputy Director General (Southern Region) while delivering the programme objectives and outlined the theme of World Standards Day, which is A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. He also spoke on the importance of Standardization. He also informed the audience about the various Sustainable Development Goals and explained how Standards are contributing to attain SDGs. He also added that BIS is having more than 10,000 Standards Clubs for School and College Students and also has conducted more than 3500 Programmes at Grassroot Level for Gram Panchayat Members.

Dr. J. Radhakrishnan IAS., Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Tamil Nadu, Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Department was the Chief Guest of the Programme. During his Presidential Address, Dr. Radhakrishnan appreciated the efforts of BIS for their Standards Promotion Efforts aimed at the benefit of Stakeholders. Dr. Radhakrishnan said that consumers shall think of BIS not only while purchasing gold jewellery, but also while purchasing every other product too. He also added that efforts are being made to bring in all Ration Shops under Quality Management System 9001:2015. Dr. Radhakrishnan detailed the various schemes of BIS and the respective programmes conducted for the stakeholders.

This was followed by undertaking Quality Pledge by the various stakeholders in the presence of the Chief Guest.

Later, an Award Ceremony wherein around 41 selected personnel who had lent active support to BIS programmes viz Standards Club Mentors, Sponsors for BIS Promotion Activities, supporters from Industry to BIS, All India First Licensees, Government Officials, Media Personnel were felicitated with BIS Mementos as Manak Veer.

Dr. Indumathi M. Nambi, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology – Madras was the Guest of Honour. During her Speech, she spoke on standards and sustainability and Climate Change, Land Degradation and Bio Diversity Loss are becoming Planetary Crisis. She also informed that the recent lifestyle on complete dependence on non-renewable resources was alarming. She also explained the merits and demerits of usage of Plastic Vs Paper and mentioned that Life Cycle assessments can only decide on which one is good for us. She added that the emerging new chemicals present in the form of Heavy metals, micro plastics and antibiotics is a serious problem to planet earth and Standards & Regulatory organisations to step-up for tackling the issues.

Earlier Shri. Gowththam B J, Scientist D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office made a presentation on the latest initiatives taken by BIS in the promotion of Standards and creation of awareness on Quality Control Orders & Shri Arun Puchakalya, Scientist D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office readout the World Standards Day Messages.

More than 700 Stakeholders were attended the programme.

Bureau of Indian Standards is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
