MANAK MAHOTSAV BEING ORGANIZED BY BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS, AHMEDABAD AS A PART OF CELEBRATION OF WORLD STANDARDS DAY, 2024

Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act 2016 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. BIS is working under the aegis of Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. BIS is serving the industry and consumers of India since its inception in 1947 when it was known as Indian Standards Institution (ISI) through its Conformity Assessment, Laboratory Services, Hallmarking and other schemes. BIS has its Headquarters at New Delhi and its 05 Regional Offices (ROs) are at Kolkata (Eastern), Chennai (Southern), Mumbai (Western), Chandigarh (Northern) and Delhi (Central). Under the Regional Offices, there are 38 Branch Offices(BOs) which offer products and consumers related services, perform standards promotional activities and serve as effective link between State Governments, industries, technical institutions, consumer organization etc. of their respective jurisdiction.

BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports substitute; control over proliferation of varieties etc. The ISI mark has become synonymous with the word ‘quality’ for almost every household in India. The much newer Hallmarking scheme has given the consumers the highest degree of assurance with respect to purity of gold. BIS is serving the state of Gujarat since 1971, through its office at Ahmedabad. During these years, manufacturing units across the Gujarat state have acquired more than 5600 licenses from BIS. It is also worth mentioning that Industries of Gujarat hold almost 12 % of the overall number of Licenses spread across the nation as well as also a leading position in All India First licenses being granted every year by BIS which shows the state’s commitment towards quality and innovation.

BIS also actively participates in international standardization activities through its membership in various international organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This alignment ensures that Indian standards are compatible with global standards, facilitating trade and promoting interoperability. To recognize the contributions of experts involved in standardization across organizations such ISO, IEC and ITU World Standards Day is celebrated annually on October 14. It was first observed in 1970 and the day is marked by various activities, including conferences, seminars, and educational events, all designed to raise awareness about the importance of standardization in the global economy.

BIS also organizes events, workshops, and seminars to raise awareness about the importance of standards leading from the forefront in our country.This year's theme continues under the multi-year campaign, ‘Shared vision for a better world,” with a focus on SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure in the age of Artificial Intelligence’. As a part of World standards Day (WSD) Celebration, BIS, Ahmedabad is organizing various activities as part of Manak Mahotsava during 01st to 14th October, 2024 including, Stakeholders conclave in various districts, Quality Walk, Quality Connect in colleges with Standards Clubs - Activities like Meme writing, quiz, reel making etc., Quality Connect with Major industries, Administering Quality Pledge and tree plantation in their premises by District Collectorates and Gram Panchayats, Gram Sabhas, Steps to Quality, etc.

Additionally, World Standards Day is a time for BIS to celebrate the experts, stakeholders, and policymakers who work tirelessly to create and enforce standards. It reinforces the idea that standards are the backbone of consumer trust, product innovation and a sustainable future.In essence, World Standards Day allows BIS to showcase its commitment to building a robust framework that ensures India's alignment with global standards, supporting industries, protecting consumers, and strengthening the nation's competitiveness on the world stage.
