A Postal Tribute to Chennai: India Post releases Philatelic Postcards during National Postal Week celebrations

The Department of Posts is celebrating National Postal Week from 7th October. This week coincides with World Post Day on the 9th of October, marking the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union’s creation in 1874.

To commemorate the occasion, on 08 October is observed as Philately Day. On this day, Shri. G. Natarajan, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region released Philatelic picture postcards featuring drawings by the renowned artist Shri M. Trotsky Marudu. The picture postcards were released as album in the theme ‘Chennai’ and in the name ‘Anbulla Chennai’.

Known for his bold experimentation across various visual mediums, Trotsky Marudu’s distinguished career spans over five decades. His ability to express emotion, form, and depth with the simplest of lines is well known. His postcards, capturing the essence of Chennai, offer a deeply nostalgic and emotionally enriching experience for both senders and recipients, evoking the city's stories and intimate details in every stroke, each stroke whispering the past into the present.

Shri Sivakumar, Actor and Artist was the chief guest and Shri Madhan, Senior Tamil Journalist and Cartoonist was the Guest of honour for the event. The picture postcards released by the Postmaster General and received by Shri Sivakumar, the renowned Tamil actor.

A philately Souvenir Box was also released by Postmaster General which was received by Senior Philatelist Shri. Chandrasekar, South India Philatelic Association. The souvenir boxes contain a notebook on the theme of Chennai, key chains and lapel pins, mouse pad, pen and pencil, coasters based on the motif of stamps and postal services. The box is priced at .750/- and is available for sale in Philatelic Bureau, Anna Road. The picture Postcards on Chennai are also available for sale in Philatelic Bureau, Chennai. The set of 20 picture post cards on Chennai is available for sale for .200/- per pack.

Shri Babu G, Assistant Director (BD), Chennai City Region welcomed the gathering. Shri G Natarajan, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region delivered the presidential speech. The Chief Guest Shri. Sivakumar and Guests of honour Shri. Madhan and Shri M Trotsky Marudu shared their thoughts on art and Chennai. Smt K Hemalatha, Assistant Director (Mails & Establishment), Chennai City Region delivered vote of thanks.

Every year, from 7th to 11th of October, the Department of Posts commemorates Postal Week. This year's festivities are planned to reflect the growing contribution of India Post to the socio-economic advancement of the country, including the financial empowerment of girls and the provision of aadhaar updates and other on-demand services, with a particular emphasis on tribal, remote, hilly, underserved, and unbanked areas.
