Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav addressed 6th Foundation Day Celebration at AIIMS Nagpur

AIIMS Nagpur celebrated its 6th Foundation Day, reflecting on six years of remarkable achievements in healthcare, medical education, research, and community service. The event was graced by Hon'ble Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, as the Chief Guest, alongside other distinguished guests.

 

The day’s proceedings began with a welcome address by Dr (Prof.) Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Nagpur. Eminent dignitaries, including Padma Shri Dr. Vikas Mahatme, President, AIIMS Nagpur and former Rajya Sabha Member, Shri Shyamkumar Daulat Barve, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha); Dr. Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), and Dr. Sanjay Paithankar, CEO & Managing Director, Right Health UAE, also addressed the gathering. Key highlights of the event included a medal distribution ceremony recognizing academic excellence among MBBS students. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Mrunal Phatak, Dean(Academics).

Key Achievements and Expansion of Services

Since its establishment in 2018, AIIMS Nagpur has rapidly grown into a premier tertiary healthcare centre.In 2023, the institution saw over 557,000 outpatient registrations, a number that reached 520,077 by September 2024, with a daily record of 4,404 patients. With 41 functional departments, New super-specialty OPDs, including those for medical gastroenterology and paediatric immunology, have expanded the range of services offered.

AIIMS Nagpur has 820 functional beds, including 76 ICU beds, with an average OPD census of 4000-4500 patients per day and a total OPD count of 17,52,641 as of 30th September. The average IPD census is 100-120 admissions per day, with 99% bed occupancy and 100% ICU occupancy, totalling 65,149 IPD cases. There are 19 functional OTs, performing 35-45 major surgeries daily, with a total of 17,038 major surgeries, including 13,594 major and 3,444 minor procedures. and over 120 emergency patients seen daily.

Recent advancements include the inauguration of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, PET-CT, and a state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit, reaffirming AIIMS Nagpur’s commitment to cutting-edge care. Notable clinical milestones include 33 successful kidney transplants: 8 live, 19 brainstem dead (BSD); First AIIMS to facilitate 6 DCDs [Donation after circulatory death] (Sept 24,Possibly 3rd Govt hospital in the country); five successful bone marrow transplants (the first in a public hospital in Maharashtra).

The institute also introduced comprehensive transgender healthcare services and launched Tobacco Cessation Centre and a Multidisciplinary Sickle Cell Centre.AIIMS Nagpur was the first to launch the "e-Vaidya" online consultant-based appointment system in December 2023, with over 3,290 appointments made by May 2024. It introduced consultant-specific appointments and pre-arrival registration, reducing waiting times with kiosks and QR codes. Both OPD and IPD are nearly fully digitalized, offering paperless services through the e-Vaidya app. AIIMS Nagpur has implemented 21 out of 23 CDAC modules, enhancing patient safety and reducing medication errors.

AIIMS Nagpur, in collaboration with NGO PATH, launched a Tele SNCU initiative in Melghat in February 2023, resulting in a 50% reduction in referrals and a decrease in mortality from 6.4% to 4.9%. This technology-driven program significantly reduced sepsis cases and transformed healthcare delivery in remote tribal areas. Other Telemedicine initiative include- Tele-Manas and E-Sanjeevani.

Commitment to Quality and Accreditation

AIIMS Nagpur’s commitment to quality care is evident in its recent accreditations. It became the first AIIMS to secure NABH entry-level accreditation in May 2023 and achieved NABH accreditation for its Ethics Committee in February 2024. In addition, the institute’s Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory was awarded NABL accreditation in May, followed by the accreditation of its Cytology Laboratory by the Indian Academy of Cytologists in September 2024.

Educational and Research Excellence

In education, AIIMS Nagpur admits 125 MBBS students annually and offers 143 postgraduate medical seats in 22 specialties. Additionally, the institute offers DM/MCh courses in six subjects, as well as BSc and MSc paramedical and nursing programs. AIIMS Nagpur is also making significant strides in research, with 38 funded projects worth Rs. 14 crores and 56 sponsored clinical trials. The institute’s research output includes over 700 publications in peer-reviewed journals.AIIMS Nagpur continues to strengthen collaborations with institutions such as CCMB Hyderabad and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik. A partnership with the Novonordisk Foundation will establish a Centre of Excellence in Diabetes, setting new benchmarks in diabetes care and research in India.

The institute’s educational initiatives include a Postgraduate Certificate Program in Advanced Healthcare Management in collaboration with IIM Nagpur and a free hybrid certificate course on Infectious Disease Modelling.

Looking ahead, AIIMS Nagpur is set to expand its services by establishing multiple Centres of Excellence, focusing on clinical trials, rare diseases, and advanced medical procedures such as heart and liver transplants,and cochlear implants. Plans also include setting up Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) Centres and a Sleep lab. To support this growth, the acquisition of an additional 50 acres of land is currently underway.AIIMS Nagpur remains steadfast in its mission to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare to underserved communities in Vidarbha and neighbouring regions, continuing its journey towards becoming a national leader in healthcare and research.
