Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.

 

Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, inaugurated the Modernized Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL) & BIS SCIENCE PARK  today in Chennai in the presence of  Smt. Nishat Sultana Haque, Deputy Director General (Laboratories), Shri Praveen Khanna, Deputy Director General (Southern Region) and Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Head-Southern Regional Laboratory.

 

During the inauguration, of Modernized Southern Regional Laboratory, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS emphasized the laboratory's pivotal role in ensuring consumer safety and product quality as this cutting-edge facility is set to enhance the facilities for testing of various products ensuring safety for consumers across the nation.

 

The newly modernized Southern Regional Laboratory boasts enhanced facilities for the five testing sections of the lab: Chemical, Electrical, Microbiological, Mechanical, and a Referral Assay Lab. These sections are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, featuring sophisticated analytical instruments designed to ensure the highest quality and safety standards for a wide range of consumer products.

 

The advanced equipment in the laboratory will facilitate comprehensive testing of essential everyday products, such as packaged drinking water, gold and silver, household cables and wires, domestic pressure cookers, LPG cylinders and stoves, TMT bars, steel and steel products, plastic pipes, cement etc. SRL is continuously upgrading to create test facilities for various products covered under Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the Government of India in the interest of consumer safety. QCOs are issued for various product categories including iron & steel, medical textiles, RO systems, building products, chemicals, toys, safety of electrical equipment, plywood etc.

 

Key Features of Modernization include Civil and Electrical Upgrades, Safety Enhancements, HVAC Facility, Clean Room Facility, Modernized Conference and Reception Areas.

 

The modernization aligns with BIS's commitment to ensuring consumer safety and promoting quality assurance in products that play a vital role in everyday life. These additions will further expand the laboratory's capabilities and meet the growing demands of the Indian industry. This facility not only enhances testing capabilities but also reflects the Government of India's ongoing dedication to consumer protection and product quality.

 

During the inauguration, of SCIENCE PARK , Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS emphasised that The Science Park in the BIS Chennai provide joy of learning in its truest sense. This Science Park with interactive exhibits is a novel concept which provides a gateway to learn the basic principles of Science and Technology in a healthy, open-air and natural environment. The models are made in a simpler manner so that the students can explore and understand the concepts on their own. BIS has carefully choosen these equipments in such a way that they demonstrate specific scientific principles, while being fun to use as well. With Science Park Children can easily know the 'How and Why' of things using the models and the related write-ups which enable them to understand the underlying principles. In this way, their logical approach and analytical capabilities are developed and they become more observant.

 

The Models/Equipments are in the science park were chosen to know and understand the concepts of angular momentum, cycloidalpath, double-ended cone, first order lever, mass and inertia, newton’s third law, pulley and pulley blocks, planetary motion, play with mirrors, revolving periscope, sympathetic swing & vortex.
