Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) Celebrates ‘International Week of Deaf People 2024’

Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (Divyangjan) {AYJNISHD (D)} Bandra (West), Mumbai, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities ( Divyangjan ), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India is celebrating ‘International Week of Deaf  People 2024’ to promote awareness and human rights of Deaf Community. The theme of this year celebration is “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”.  International Week of Deaf People is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy. It is celebrated annually by the global Deaf Community on the last week of September each year to commemorate the same month the first World Congress of the WFD was held. The International Week of Deaf People celebration has begun on 23.09.2024 with lecturer by Shri Sunil Sahastrabudhe, CEO, Signex and Prof. Madan Vashishta, Former Dean, Gallaudet University, USA on “Sign Language Rights” and will conclude on 29.09.2024 with panel discussion on Investing in the Future of Deaf Communities. The events of International Week of Deaf People will comprise of talk on Inclusive Education, Sign Language Advocacy, Diversity in Deaf Communities etc.

The Department of Education has initiated the celebration of International Week of Deaf People with a strong emphasis on promoting inclusivity and accessibility. As a part of the initiative, a key focus will be placed on creating safety measures & tools for Women with Deafness, ensuring that they are empowered, protected and supported in all walks of life.

Distribution of ‘Eveready Siren- A Torch’ by Ms. Insiyah, Marketing Head, Eveready, in presence of Dr. Suman Kumar, Director, AYJNISHD(D) & Mr. Alok Kejriwal, CEO, ISH News

 

Shri Alok Kejriwal, Prof. Asmita Huddar, Prof. Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta, Shri A.S. Narayanan, Ms. Tina Saighal, Mr. Sapan Jain, Mr. Aqil Chinoy, Ms. Pooja Barot and other achievers will graced the celebration. As part of celebration, AYJNISHD(D)  organized an event on Surakshit Kanya: Sashakt Kanya “Safety of Adult Deaf Girls” in collaboration with Eveready on 26.09.2024. Eveready company distributed a safety tool ‘Eveready Siren- A Torch’ to approximately 80 girl students. Around 80 students with Deafness with their escorts from various Special Schools were imparted training in Safety Measures.

Through these efforts, AYJNISHD (D) and Eveready Siren – a torch with a safety alarm, aim to uphold gender equity and empower women across all sectors of society.
