Raj Bhavan Goa marks PM Modi’s 74th birthday with prayers, pooja, and a unique initiative to rejuvenate age-old trees

In a first of its kind initiative, Raj Bhavan Goa conducted ‘Prachin Vriksha Ayurvedic Chikitsa’ for the age-old trees on the Raj Bhavan premises with an aim of rejuvenating them, as a mark of respect to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi who celebrated his 74th birthday on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

Shri. P S Sreedharan Pillai, Governor of Goa, along with First Lady of Goa Smt. Rita Pillai, Minister for Environment Shri Aleixo Sequeira and other dignitaries attended various events including holding special poojas at the temple and gaushala and also offering prayers at the chapel on the Raj Bhavan premises. As part of the series of events, the Governor also garlanded the 500-year-old Baobab tree outside the Raj Bhavan gate. The prayers were held seeking the blessings of God for the good health of Prime Minister Modi and peace and prosperity of the country.

Later, addressing a gathering at the Old Durbar Hall, the Governor said that Prachin Vriksha Ayurvedic Chikitsa, which is also known as Poshana Yoga for the nourishment of trees as per principles of Vriksha Ayurveda, is a first of its kind initiative by the Raj Bhavan, Goa. Seven trees that are more than 100-year-old and are slowly decaying due to infections and other reasons have been identified on the Raj Bhavan premises for treatment to restore their health and bestow them with a longer lease of life, he said.
“The traditional method of treatment and rejuvenation of the trees is still not known much to the world and hence it would be appropriate to demonstrate this unique tree therapy in Raj Bhavan as a mission to save age-old trees using traditional methods,” Governor Pillai said.

Ayurvedic conservationists, doctors from Kerala were invited to carry out the treatment. “The initiative will inspire the public, particularly the younger generation, for take similar unique steps for protecting and preserving Goa's natural heritage and wonderful traditions,” the Governor said, adding that he was happy that the Raj Bhavan Goa took such a noble initiative on the occasion of the birthday of Prime Minister Modi.

Dr. Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, who presided over the function, wished Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi and said that he has been a beacon of strength and vision for the country. “His leadership has steered India towards greater heights, not just in terms of economic growth and technological advancements, but also in reviving and preserving the essence of Bharatiya culture and tradition,” the Chief Minister said.
Praising the Raj Bhavan for unique initiatives for preserving Goa's environment, promoting sustainable development, and reconnecting the public with the wisdom of our ancient heritage, the Chief Minister said that the ancient trees hold the stories of the land and are a testament to our respect for nature. “Therefore, I appeal all the Goans to come forward with such initiatives to preserve the traditional old trees in the State,” he said.
Dr. P.M. Varier, Managing Trustee, Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala, Kerala; and Shri Devidas Varier, Managing Director, Coimbatore Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu also spoke at the program. Shri MRM Rao, Secretary to the Governor, and Shri. R. Mihir Vardhan, Special Officer to the Governor, were also present on the occasion.
Recently, Raj Bhavan Goa has undertaken yet another unique initiative towards paying a glorious tribute to Indian medicine by deciding to install the statues of two of the legendary physicians of ancient India – Charaka, the 'Father of Ayurveda', and Sushruta, the 'Father of Surgery,' on the premises of the Raj Bhavan, which is likely to be inaugurated by the end of September this year.
