NITC steps forward in Electric Vehicle Research; Inaugurates Collaborative Research Lab Funded by Tata Elxsi and Signs MoU with Keltron

Taking the National Institute of Technology Calicut ahead in Electric Vehicle research, an EV Technology Research and Collaboration Lab (E-TRAC Lab) was inaugurated at NITC on Friday. The Research Lab, a significant joint venture between the Centre for Electric Vehicle Engineering (CEVE) at NIT Calicut and Tata Elxsi Pvt Ltd, will be a milestone in electric vehicle research and innovation.

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NITC and Mr Shaju S, Vice President and Head of the Transportation Business Unit at Tata Elxsi, jointly inaugurated the collaborative venture.

Tata Elxsi has made the largest investment in NITC ever by an industry, said Prof. Prasad Krishna. The collaboration will help students and research scholars further their research in electric vehicles, which is the future of transportation, he said. He also suggested expanding studies to environment-friendly technology for transportation and avoiding the issues caused by batteries.

The event also witnessed a collaborative initiative between NITC and Keltron Pvt Ltd. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Keltron Pvt Ltd for the strong collaborative effort to further mutual goals in electric vehicles. Partnership with Keltron Component Complex Ltd, a key player in Kerala's industrial landscape through pioneering innovations, extensive product development, and substantial employment and training initiatives, will support electric vehicle initiatives by the CEVE.

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NITC, and Mr. Krishnakumar K.G., Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Keltron Component Complex Ltd, exchanged the MoU. The MoU will focus on collaborative research in multi-disciplinary areas, including electric vehicle-related research.

The event underscored the importance of private industry-public academia partnerships in EV technology. The collaboration between NITC and Tata Elxsi represents a crucial step in fostering innovation and sustainable transportation solutions.

"The lab is in the first phase and will test inverters and motors. Besides, it will focus on the design and development of power electronic systems," said Mr. Shaju. The lab will also focus on environment-friendly solutions for transportation and futuristic electric vehicle technology, he added.

CEVE, established to spearhead research and development in electric vehicle technologies, currently involves 42 multi-disciplinary faculty members and oversees six projects worth ₹2.3 Crore. The centre is dedicated to advancing patents, training aspirants and service personnel, and promoting awareness of electric vehicle (EV) technology.
