The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) organized ‘A Cinematic Celebration of Womanhood’ on Monday (March 11, 2024), as part of celebrations of International Women’s Day 2024.                                                                                                                                         

A panel discussion on the topic ‘Women in Cinema Shaping Global Narratives’ was organized in hybrid mode on the occasion. The session was moderated by Film Director, Producer and Screenwriter Shri Jayprad Desai. The panelists included :-

Iranian Filmmaker and Women’s Rights Activist  Ms. Mahnaz Mohammadi

Indian Film Editor and Winner of National Film Award Ms. Sanyukta Kaza

French Costume Designer and President of French AFCCA Ms. Madeline Fontaine

Serbian Cinematographer and Vice-President of IMAGO Ms. Bojana Andric

Lebanese Sound Designer, Filmmaker and Jury for the 72nd Berlinale Ms. Rana Eid

In the insightful session the panelists coming from all around the world shared their experiences of working as a woman in cinema and also spoke about dealing with gender stereotypes in the film industry. This was followed by a Q&A session for the audience.

The Consul Général for France in Mumbai Mr. Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet was present amongst the dignitaries on the occasion. The Consul General shared his views on overcoming gender disparity and also spoke about women in French Cinema.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, a special screening of the 2020 film Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao, was organized. This powerful movie highlighting the survival of a woman against all odds.

Through this celebration, NFDC and NMIC aimed at recognizing women's efforts and highlighting their role in shaping narratives in cinema. It was a testament of womanhood and all that it encompasses.
