The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology, and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai, also known as IHM, Mumbai, celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in Mumbai today. India's G-20 Sherpa Shri Amitabh Kant, who was present as the Chief Guest at the function, emphasized on the vital role to be played by the hospitality sector in achieving India's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.

Speaking on the occasion, Amitabh Kant said that the recently concluded G-20 conferences in India solidified India's standing as a cultural powerhouse and a premier destination for an authentic experience. With India set to become the world's third-largest economy by 2027, there will be a surge in Indian travellers globally, leading to more opportunities and responsibilities for the hospitality sector, added the G-20 India Sherpa. He added that hosting G-20 conferences across 60 Indian cities in 2022-23 boosted post-COVID tourism, he added. Shri Kant also stated that he has witnessed a multifold impact of tourism, hospitality, and culture on a global level.

Speaking about IHM, Mumbai, its contributions and future role, the G-20 India Sherpa said, IHM stands at a critical juncture of new and endless possibilities. Planning for the next 30 years of "Amrit Kaal" is crucial for the institution as India will contribute 30 percent of the global workforce by 2047, he said. "It requires thinking fresh, thinking large, and envisioning IHM Mumbai as the world's best hospitality institution. This necessitates a new vision and outlook, as IHM Mumbai will shape the future of the global community".

Amitabh Kant also expressed satisfaction in seeing more young general managers and industry leaders in the hospitality industry, with the majority coming from IHM Mumbai. Reflecting on IHM's establishment 70 years ago in 1954, he recalled its humble beginnings in an old army barrack, contrasting it with its current status as a premium institute in the global hospitality sector. He acknowledged IHM's early founding members like Leelavati Munshi, PC Rajpal, Belfield Smith and Thangam E. Philip, and noted that the Institute continues to shine. 

The dignitaries present on the occasion included Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra and Chairperson of the Governing Body of IHM, Mumbai, Jayshree Bhoj; Nakul Anand, former Executive Director, ITC Hotels; and many notable alumni from batches since 1970s. ,  presided over the function. In her address, Smt. Bhoj emphasized on the history and contribution of IHM Mumbai in shaping India's hospitality sector to new horizons. Dr. Nisheeth Srivastava, Principal of IHM Mumbai, while thanking all the guests, award winners, and associates for the success of today's event, provided a brief description of the major achievements of the institute and expressed great pride in its continuous growth and contribution. 

The former students and notable alumni who were felicitated on the occasion included Param kanampilly, Sonal Holland, Advani, CV Ravindranath, Kamlesh Barot, Sheila Vasan Singla, Kainaz Messman, amongst others for their contribution towards the institute's development and hospitality sector.

Established in 1954 by the All India Women's Central Food Council through the efforts of Smt. Lilavati Munshi, IHM Mumbai, which started with just six students, has played an important role in the hospitality industry by providing education to more than 50,000 graduates till date. Let it be known that this institute has been a pioneer in the field of hospitality education in India.
