A State Level Round Table conference held to discuss the issues and highlight the importance and methods of self-compilation of the ASI (the Annual Survey of Industries) at WTC Mumbai

A State Level Round Table conference with the office bearers of the Industrial Associations was held in collaboration with All India Association of Industries (AIAI) at WTC Mumbai today (08th February 2024).The conference was aimed to discuss the issues and highlight the importance and methods of self-compilation of the ASI (the Annual Survey of Industries) Returns. ASI is conducted every year by the National Sample Survey Office (Field Operations Division).

Shri Vijay Kalantri, President, AIAI,Smt Supriya Roy, Deputy Director General, NSSO (FOD), Regional Office, Mumbai, Shri Amol Khandare, Joint Director, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Govt of Maharashtra were present at the conference.

In his address Shri Vijay Kalantri mentioned that, success of Annual Survey of Industries can be achieved with the cooperation of Associations and industrial units which will pave the way for Government to formulate policies and plans for the development of industrial sectors. He appreciated the efforts of National Sample Survey Office for organizing the conference for the benefit of Associations to submit the ASI returns in time.

Smt Supriya Roy, DDG, explained the importance of ASI data, being the principal source of industrial statistics of Manufacturing sector in India. ASI data is used for the compilation of the Gross Value Addition of industries in economy. The data collected through the survey is confidential. In her address, she also appealed to industries to cooperate with the officers of NSSO to submit the ASI data in time.

Further, it was highlighted by Smt Roy that, NSSO is organizing the training camp in various industrial areas to guide the selected units to submit the error free data on portal.
Shri Amol Khandare Also explained the role of DES and how state is using this ASI data in planning and policy formulation of Maharashtra State.
During the conference, importance of ASI and its self-compilation through online portal was explained. It was informed that, through ASI data on operating expenses and Operating receipts of manufacturing unit and details of inputs and output are collected, for the purpose of understanding the ownership, operations and working of the manufacturing unit and the contribution of sector to Gross Value Addition (GVA) in Economy. It was also emphasized that there are large units whose contribution to GVA is high and are termed as High priority units, and information from these units are sought on priority. It is thus imperative, that the exercise of data collection can be successful only with the cooperation of manufacturing sector.
Total 45 office bearers of various industrial associations are present in the meeting. Participants are interacted with officials and appreciated the efforts taken by the NSSO.
Background
Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) is the principal source of Industrial Statistics in India. It provides statistical information to access and evaluate the changes in the growth, composition and structure of the organised manufacturing sector comprising activities related to manufacturing processes, repairs and services, generation, transmission etc. of electricity, gas and water supply and cold storage. The survey is statutory in nature under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 (as amended in 2017) and rules framed there under.
