BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS (BIS) CELEBRATED 77TH FOUNDATION DAY AT CHENNAI TODAY

Bureau of Indian Standards is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
BIS is completing 76 glorious years in serving the Nation and has entering the 77th year on 06 January 2024.
The Main Function of 77thBIS FOUNDATION DAY - 2024 PROGRAMME was held on 05 Jan 2024, Friday at 10:00 hrs at Hotel SAVERA, Chennai.
Smt.G.Bhavani, Scientist-E/Director & Head (BIS-Chennai Branch Office)welcomed the Delegates. During her speech she informed that to Commemorate the BIS Foundation day, various programmes are being conducted by BIS since 01 Jan 2024. Day Long Programmes were conducted in 16 Government schools during 02-04 Jan 2024 wherein various competitions like Slogan Writing, Poster Making, Speech Competitions were held for the students of Standard Club. The Students actively participated in the competitions and the winners of the competitions were awarded prizes. The Schools were also issued Free Sports Kit [ worth Rs.25,000 ] as a goodwill gesture and sponsored by the licencees of BIS.He also added that in addition, Quality Connect Programmes were also held during 01-04 Jan 2024 in 15 Industries at their premises who are Licencees of BIS
Shri USP Yadhav, Scientist- G & Deputy Director General (Southern Region),BISdelivered the Programme Objectives.He quoted that BIS Since 1947 have come a long way and this achievements are not possible without the support from industry partners.He said today BIS has formulated more than 22,000 standards and all Quality Certification schemes of BIS have contributed to industry at large. He also added that its high time that Academicia to take part in Standardization/Certification Activities will help economic growth.
Shri Vikram Kapur, IAS; Additional Chief Secretary&Director General-Anna Administrative Staff College was the Chief Guest.During his inaugural speech he complimented BIS for completing 76 Years and stepinto 77th year of Service to the Nation.He quoted instances from the importance of Quality and how it affected Tea Industry at large during his period.He was appreciating BIS for the Standards Promotion activities,Quality Sensitization Programmes for Government,Schools and Gram Panchayatsetc.,He added that BIS shall have presence in all State and also at District Levels. He ended his speech by conveying his wishes to all the award winners of today.
Shri D Jeevandham,Scientist-D made a presentation on the evolution of standards Promotion Activity of BIS over the years.
This was followed by an Award Ceremony wherein
a) 3 All India First Licencees [ BUTTERFLY GANDHIMATHI APPLIANCES LTD, SYSTEM 5S PRIVATE LIMITED, PONMANI INTERNATIONAL INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED ]
b) 64 Licencees who have been performing exceedingly well over a period of 3 yrs by appraisal of sample taken at factory and at market
c) 43 Students who have won prizes in the BIS Foundation Day National & Regional Quiz Competitions
d) AManak Veer Award for Shri Gurubabu Balaraman, Director & Head-Regional News Unit, Doordarshan Podhigai, who has been instrumental in supporting in carrying the BIS awareness messages to the masses through Doordarshan Podhigai News
were felicitated with BIS Mementos.
The session was followed by Cultural Activities ( Song, Dance, Skit, Mime) by Students of Schools/Colleges.
