TRIFED organizes Tribal Artisan Empanelment Mela at Madgaon


Artisans from Gowda, Velip, Kunbi tribes from five talukas take part in the mela

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED (), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, organized a Tribal Artisan Empanelment Mela (TAeM) in South Goa, today, 14 December, 2023. The mela was held at the office of the Deputy Director, Tribal Welfare, Second Floor, Opposite Municipal Garden, Madgaon.

Tribal communities from diverse backgrounds were invited to participate in the melas and showcase their extraordinary artistry, unique traditions, and remarkable skills. Over 25 artisans belonging to Gowda, Velip, Kunbi tribes from Sanguem, Canacona, Quepem, Ponda, and Salcete talukas took part in the mela and exhibited their products. The artists exhibited various products such as handmade hanging items, handmade rice fitter, Kunbi saree,  Goan handbag, organic white mulli etc. They were also briefed by the organizers about the support their entrepreneurship can get from the TRIFED after the empanelment. Five individual artisans and three Self Help Groups were empanelled at the mela.

Smt Sawti Dalvi, Deputy Director of Tribal Welfare department;  Shri S P Sudalai, Deputy Manager of TRIFED; Shri Pramod Ambedkar, Assistant Director of KVIC; Shri Sagar Verlekar,  Assistant Director of Tribal Welfare department, and Shri Anup Shenai, District Welfare Officer of Tribal Welfare department, were present at the occasion.

The objective of the mela was to encourage tribal artisans to show their artistic skills and take up entrepreneurship to augment their income levels.  The event provided a platform for talented tribal artisans to be empanelled and recognized for their exceptional craftsmanship. The empanelment process facilitates enduring support, market access, and opportunities for collaborations with designers, exporters, and stakeholders in the handicraft sector.

The empanelment also offers substantial support to tribal artisans as it will assist them in improving their ethnic products through enhanced designs and skill development training programs. It also provides them with direct exposure to external markets through various festivals across the country.
