In a splendid convergence of history, spirituality, and haute couture, Gandhinagar presented the  तूल-वस्त्र-वेदं Design showcase as part of the 81st plenary meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).

The event was a collaborative effort between the office of the Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, and NIFT Gandhinagar in partnership with BSL association. The participating brands—House of Pataudi, Prakriti, Triburg, COEK, and Taavi—brought forth their distinct perspectives on India's finest cotton – informed Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director, NIFT Gandhinagar.

Concept Introduction:

The evening commenced with a warm welcome extended to esteemed guests, including Textile Commissioner of India, Mrs. Roop Rashi and Founder & National General Secretary of BSL Association, Mr. Raman Dutta. The host set the stage for an exploration of fabric, history, and spiritual essence through तूल-वस्त्र-वेदं, inviting the audience to witness an exquisite journey.

Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director, NIFT Gandhinagar highlighted that in this showcase, Cotton ceases to be a mere fabric; it emerges as a profound legacy, intricately woven with ancient wisdom and enduring sophistication. The show comprised of 5 sequences, which is a representation of 5 concepts from the vedas, namely Brahaman, the essence of existence, Aatman, which is the essence of self, Samsara, which is the external cycles of life, Karma yoga, which is perfection in one’s actions, and Moksha, which is one’s liberation from external cycles of life.

Kasturi Cotton :

Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood explained about ‘Kasturi Cotton’ which is an initiative of the Government of India, Textile Trade Bodies and Industry that aims to cultivate a distinct identity for Indian Cotton. The brand’s objective is to create premium value for cotton grown in India as per benchmarked specifications. The initiative utilises blockchain technology and traceability and transparency of transactions to enhance credibility and promote sustainable practices in homegrown cotton production, melding the worlds of technology and agriculture to bolster the Indian Cotton.

Artistic Depiction of History:

A skit titled "Silent Threads: The Journey of Indus Valley as Pioneers of Cotton" creatively illustrated the historical significance of cotton in India. The silent narrative unfolded the pioneering role of the Indus Valley Civilization in cultivating and disseminating cotton, echoing through ages.

Showcase Sequences:

Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood informed that the showcase comprised five sequences, each representing a concept from the Vedas:

  • House of Pataudi - ब्रह्म (BRAHM~) THE TOTALITY OF EXISTENCE : Celebrating the totality of existence, the collection embodied the joyful essence of Brahman, seamlessly fusing heritage and modernity.
  • Prakriti - आत्म (AATMAN~) THE SELF: Exploring the self, this collection invited the audience on a journey of self-discovery, emphasizing purity of life and mind.

Cultural Extravaganza - Garba:

The evening concluded with a vibrant display of Gujarat's cultural phenomenon, Garba, adding a touch of tradition and festivity to the event. The UNESCO-listed folk dance was a fitting homage to the rich cultural tapestry of Gujarat, celebrating fertility, motherhood, and the cyclical nature of life – informed Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood.

In closing, the तूल-वस्त्र-वेदं showcase served as a poignant reminder that fashion transcends mere clothing—it is a narrative that embraces history, spirituality, and the timeless elegance.
