Artisan Awareness Workshop conducted by the Fashion Management Department.

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Gandhinagar, Fashion Management Department organised three- days  Artisan Awareness Workshop from 1-3 November 2023. Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director NIFT Gandhinagar and Shri Vasamsetty Ravi Teja, I.P.S., Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, jointly inaugurated the Artisan Awareness Workshop organised by FMS department at NIFT Gandhinagar Campus.

Prof. Dr. Sameer Sood, Director NIFT Gandhinagar welcomed all artisans to the NIFT Gandhinagar for an enriching learning process. He said that artisans from different craft clusters have participated in the workshop, and significant crafts like Mata-ni- Pachedi, Soof Embroidery, Agate, Dhabla, Dhurries, and Kala Cotton were displayed in the Workshop.  

On 3 November 2023 a seminar was conducted on the subject “Craft Commerce Confluence: Business Expansion in Craft Sector”, Mr. Neetesh Bhargava, Mr. Nilesh Priyadarshi, Ms. Jaai Kakani, Mr. Chandramauli Pathak was the eminent guests on the occasion.  

Following deliberation taken place during the seminar within the realm of traditional Indian crafts, encounter exceptional artisans deeply committed to preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. Ms. Sheelaben, a skilled Soof embroidery artisan, faces the challenge of lacking marketing knowledge. At the same time, Ajibhai Bhati specializes in Soof leatherwork and is not only dedicated to honing his craft but also to sharing his expertise . These artisans embody the rich traditions and unwavering dedication of the Indian handicraft community.

In another facet of Indian craftsmanship, Mr. Vankar Parvesh manages his family's traditional Dhabla weaving business, successfully transitioning it to the digital age and showcasing the harmonious blend of tradition and technology. Furthermore, Ms. Rasila Ben's award-winning Dhurries represent a fusion of nature, culture, and craftsmanship, highlighting the versatility and timelessness of these handwoven textiles. These artisans continue to be champions in preserving and promoting India's diverse and rich craft heritage.

Hailing from the Kutch region of Gujarat, artisans like Mr Ajibhai Bhati and Mr. Bhanubhai Chitara have demonstrated exceptional skills in crafts such as Soof and Mata-ni-Pachede. Mr. Bhanubhai Chitara, in particular, has thoroughly created a masterpiece, a shawl, investing an impressive 10-11 months of labour. He plans to apply for a National Award in December 2023, a well-deserved recognition for his extraordinary dedication and craftsmanship.
