Pune, 26 September 2023

Audiences at the National Film Development Corporation - National Film Archive of India, Pune theater who had come to watch the restored version of Jewel Thief on Monday 25th september were in for a surprise as director Vijay Anand’s son, Vaibhav Anand had come down from Mumbai to watch the movie and the process of film restoration at NFDC-NFAI.

To celebrate the centenary of debonair actor Dev Anand, the NFDC-NFAI is conducting a 4-day screening of 7 of his classics along with a nationwide screening at PVR and INOX pan India which took place on 23rd and 24th September in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation.

Vaibhav Anand witnessed these movies in 4k resolution first during a screening in Juhu, Mumbai, which were restored by the NFDC-NFAI, as part of the National Film Heritage Mission under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Speaking about the visit, a NFDC-NFAI official was quoted as saying, “Vaibhav ji mentioned that he was stunned to see how crisp the restored version of the movie had turned out, that too after 60-70 years of keeping the reels preserved and was intrigued to learn about the process of restoration. So he headed to Pune to see it all in action.”

The crowd at NFDC-NFAI went into an uproar when his presence was announced, right before the screening of ‘Jewel Thief’, Anand addressed the crowd saying, “It’s quite a response to these movies restored under the National Film Heritage Mission - a Government of India initiative. I was lucky to go through the archive and witness how they are by bringing back old movies.”

He also added a humorous anecdote about Jewel Thief, “There was a little bit of a controversy as to whose title should be given first, because Dev Anand was launched by Ashok Kumar, long back, so my dad said, let's make it ‘Dev Anand presents, Ashok Kumar’ so that way there is no ego problem”

To continue the celebration of the heritage that Dev Anand has given to the Indian film industry, the NFDC-NFAI is hosting an exhibition of exquisite posters of Dev Anand movies at the NFDC-NFAI premises starting from Tuesday, 26th September to Sunday, 1st October. Vaibhav Anand inaugurated the exhibition in a ceremony followed by a private tour of the Jaikar Bunglow.

The NFDC-National Film Archive of India is committed to revitalizing classic cinema from the past by restoring and presenting it in stunning 4K quality. Numerous films are currently undergoing restoration, and audiences can anticipate many more such screenings in the coming days.
