Celebration of 17th Statistics Day on the occasion of birth anniversary of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis on 29th June 2023

Statistics Day is celebrated on 29th June every year since 2007 at national level in recognition of the notable contributions made by (Late) Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of Official Statistics and Economic Planning of the country in the post-independence era. This year 17th Statistics Day was celebrated by DES, Gandhinagar in conjugation with FOD(RO-Ahmedabad) & DPD(DPC-Ahmedabad) in the CPL building conference hall. 

The ceremony was inaugurated by the esteemed guests invited on the occasion.  Shri Rakesh R. Pandya, Director, DES, Gandhinagar delivered the welcome address.  Shri S. K. Bhanawat, DDG, NSSO(FOD), RO, Ahmedabad delivered the key note address and Dr. Rahul S. Jagtap, DDG, NSSO(DPD) –DPC, Ahmedabad enlightened the audience with the contributions and achievements of the Late Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis in the field of Statistics.  Shri S. K. Hudda, Ex-Director, DES, Govt. of Gujarat, Dr. B. B. Jani, Retired Head of Department (Statistics) and Dr. Chetana Bhavsar, Head of Department (Statistics), Gujarat University, graced the ceremony with their precious presence and valuable speeches on the subject.  The theme of the Statistics Day this year was, ‘Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals(SDG)’.

The objective of celebrating Statistics Day of creating of public awareness, especially among the younger generation, on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for the development of the country was well met by the presence of the students and interns in conspicuous numbers.   One of the major event during the celebration was the inauguration/launching of books on “Jilla Aankada Adhikarishrini kacherini karyapranali” and “Business Register Kshetraman varsh-2022 antit falo temaj vargikaran (Rajkot Region)” to be put on the domain of Statistical arena for the benefit of public at large as well as administrators and end-users.  Local students pursuing Statistics/ Economics as a career, interns deputed for studies in three host offices celebrating the day and other invitees participated in this event. Quiz, antakshari, rangoli, elocution competitions etc. on topics such as official statistics, SDGs etc. were organised on this occasion. Prizes were distributed to winner participants by the renowned dignitaries present on the occasion.   Some technical sessions by the officials from the host offices and presentations by the students on the Theme and the various surveys conducted by the NSSO were arranged for the participants of the Statistics Day celebration. The 17th Statistics Day was celebrated with vigorous enthusiasm enhancing the awareness about Statistics especially among students.
