Mumbai, 29 June 2023
The Government of India has been celebrating 29th June every year, since 2007, as “Statistics Day”, to mark the birth anniversary of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, in recognition of his valuable contribution in the field of Economics, Planning and Statistics. The major objective of celebrating Statistics Day is creation of public awareness, especially among younger generation, on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for development of the country. On each Statistics Day, one particular theme of current national importance is chosen for intensive and focused discussion towards filling the data gaps and improvements in data collection, processing and dissemination. This year, the theme selected for the Statistics Day, 2023 is ‘Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for monitoring Sustainable Development Goals'.
NSSO (FOD), Mumbai, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, successfully celebrated the Statistics Day, 2023 in association with S.K.Somaiya College, Mumbai at S.K.Somaiya College in Vidyavihar, Mumbai today.

This would be integral to reach targets by 2030 for sake of humanity at our planet. In connection with this year's theme of Statistics Day, it may be stated that the UN General Assembly in its 70th Session considered and adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and associated 169 targets for the next 15 years. The 17 SDGs came into force in 01st January, 2016.Though not legally binding; the SDGs have become de facto international obligations and have potential to reorient domestic spending priorities of the countries during the next fifteen years. The 2030 Agenda also underscored that quality, reliable and disaggregated data will be needed for measurement of progress on the targets and to ensure that “No One is Left Behind”. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has developed a National Indicator Framework (NIF) for Sustainable Development Goals, in sync with GIF, for facilitating the monitoring of SDGs at national level. The NIF was developed following due consultations with line Ministries/Departments, States/UTs, UN agencies, Research Institutions and other stakeholders. MoSPI periodically reviews and refines the NIF in consultation with relevant stakeholders. Based on the latest NIF, MoSPI releases the annual progress report with time series data which helps in tracking the progress of SDGs at national level. MoSPI is also making efforts to ensure that State Governments and UT Administrations have guidance and capacities to monitor the SDGs at the state and lower levels as the States/UTs have a vital role in monitoring the progress towards SDGs and associated targets at sub-national level.
