On the 11th day of G20 Jan Bhagidari Activities by NIT Rourkela, school students got the future perspective of Artificial Intelligence applications in building a Smart City. As 'Future of Work' is a theme given to Odisha for the 3rd Education Working Group Meeting, NIT Rourkela conducted a workshop on 'Artificial Intelligence on Smart City'. Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya Rourkela and Bondamunda attended the session. Research scholars and faculties from the Department of Electronics and Communication (EC), NIT Rourkela, also joined the session and assisted the students in learning with hands-on experience of the recent technologies exhibited during the programme.

Inaugurating the workshop, Prof. K. Umamaheswar Rao (Director of NIT Rourkela) said, "These Jan Bhagidari activities are to trigger a dream in you for what you want to become tomorrow. You have a dream, but Artificial Intelligence (AI) does not have a dream; they do not have emotions and have limitations, so never let AI control you. Today, we are here to discuss how AI can help build the city we all live in. For example, it can help manage and improve public transport, optimise energy, waste management and sustainable goals towards green development. I urge all the students to think about how AI will be useful in helping the underprivileged people of society. Even a classroom invention can lead to solving the problems of many individuals. Be determined towards the common goal of serving the nation."

Prof. Snehashish Chakraverty (Nodal Officer for G20 Jan Bhagidari events of NIT Rourkela) also interacted with students and said that AI is being applied in every field, from mobile phones to weather, to medicine, pharma or any other industry. Using advanced algorithms and machine learning techniques, Artificial Intelligence can help cities become more efficient, sustainable, and resilient.

Prof. Rohan Dhiman (Registrar), Prof. Santanu Kumar Behera (HOD, Electronics and Communication Engineering), Prof. Santos Kumar Das, and Prof. Supratim Gupta encouraged and guided the school students by detailing the various aspect of the academic journey and school life. Research scholars of the EC department also attended a Question Answer Session with students and showed them the new technologies being studied in their departmental laboratories. Currently, the EC department students are researching subjects like the Application of IoT, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, embedded systems, advanced communication, microwaves, Communication networking etc. With the participantion of 100 students, the workshop ended with a note on the goals of G20 India.
Aiming more at women's participation in Jan Bhagidari events, a ‘Tree Plantation Drive’ was also conducted in the girl's hostel (Kiran Majumdar Shaw Hall of Residence, NIT Rourkela) to raise awareness about sustainable development and increase the green cover of the premises. During this event, Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director) expressed his concern about the climate crisis and urged everyone to save soil and water.
