The G20 Troika, consisting of three developing and emerging economies – Indonesia, India, and Brazil – came together around the need to catalyse efforts to achieve targets set by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The G20 DRR WG intends to include considerations for the Sendai Framework’s mid-term review, renew multilateral cooperation at all levels, and inform future global policies and initiatives related to Disaster Risk Reduction. The DRR Track of the G20 India Presidency will comprise three DRR WG Meetings; whereby discussions will be held on the identified five priorities:

  1. Global coverage of Early Warning Systems
  2. Increased commitment towards making infrastructure systems – disaster resilient
  3. Stronger national financial frameworks for DRR
  4. Strengthened national and global disaster response system
  5. Increased application of ecosystems-based approaches to DRR

India’s National Disaster Management Authority, MHA, chaired by Shri Kamal Kishore, Member Secretary, will lead the discussion during the DRR WG. Along with the main working group meeting, two side events are envisaged on ‘Early Warning-Early Action’ and ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and its Impact on Global Infrastructure Resilience: Insights for the G20’ respectively.

As a prelude to the main working group meeting, delegates will also be hosted at the DRR WG: Curtain Raiser – ‘Learning from Disasters: Memorialising disasters, learning, building back better, investing in resilience’. It will be held at the Auditorium, Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (GIDM) on the 29th of March 2023, from 1800 to 1915 hrs (IST).

This session would provide a platform to all the participating delegates to share their experience of disasters, particularly geo-physical disasters and how they have used learnings from these to design a green, inclusive and resilient future.

Delegates will be hosted for ‘Ratri Bhojan Samvad’ (Conversations over dinner) by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, to provide an opportunity to enjoy the rich cultural heritage and cuisine of Gujarat.
