Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) was launched during the year 2015-16, with an aim to enhance physical access of water on farm and expand cultivable area under assured irrigation, improve on-farm water use efficiency, introduce sustainable water conservation practices, etc.
Subsequently, continued implementation of PMKSY for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26 has been approved by Government of India in December, 2021. Therein, creation of 13.88 lakh hectare irrigation potential under Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) component of PMKSY has been envisaged during 2021-26, which works out to an average irrigation potential creation of about 2.77 lakh hectare per year.
Government of India provides technical support, and also partial financial assistance under its ongoing schemes, to the State Governments for the identified irrigation projects. However, it is for the State Government concerned to take up planning and implementation of irrigation projects, as per their own priorities and resource availability, etc.
The PMKSY-AIBP is an ongoing schemes under this Ministry, which focuses on creation of irrigation potential through completion of the identified major and medium irrigation projects. Irrigation potential of 24.47 lakh hectare has been created under PMKSY-AIBP during 2016-22.
